Maybe someone can give me some pointers on were to look for the problem here. 100% stock 71 Maverick, automatic trans, 200 - I6, no a/c, no power steering. car has 61,000 original miles. Drove the car to work this morning, no problems, strated it up to go home, and when I get it up to around 30, it starts to shake like a tire is out of balance, I pull over and leave the car running, and get out to check the tires. All tires look good, I looked to see if a weight fell off a tire, they looked fine. When I had it stopped, I brought the idle up a bit while in park, and the engine seems to be running fine while stopped. I get it back going and get up to 50 or so and trow it into neutril to see if it has an issue, and it coasted smooth as slik, pop it back into drive and bang the shaking is back. Getting closer to home and going down side streets, I put it into first and second gear to see if maybe the transmission has an issue, but between 0-30 in both gears it seems fine. It seems to be prominent when you accelerate. When I got home I checked the fan blade to see if it was in one piece and it was, everything seemed to be running smooth in the garage... Help, what can I look for here? I put it in the garage and figured I would monkey with it tomorrow, but it bugs me cause it has never giving me this problem before. Thanks in advance, Glen
Did your balancer slip? Shouldn't have unless you revved the crap out of it. Otherwise, I would say you threw a tread on one of your tires... But your description doesn't fit my diagnosis. I will need to pass on this one... I wouldn't think the tailshaft housing bushing would go out that fast, only other thing I can think of with your description.
Bad U joint, bad tire(belt shifted)loose lug nuts, wheel out of balance(hard to tell by just looking)bad rag joint on steering column,Hope this helps,Im sure ther are more things that will cause this but my brain is burned out at this point today(sorry)Good luck.
...if it just does it ...under load...check the...plug wires/plugs .... sounds like a misfire to me.(dead on one cyl) ...Frank...:Handshake
I would agree on the misfire. Some other shaking causes can be an issue with the front suspension, or on a long shot, a broken break drum (shaking even when not breaking).
Check the easy things first - are all the lug nuts tight? Next check the u-joints - My thought is that one of them is completely shot. You will have to remove the drive shaft to really check the joints. You may want to go to the parts store first and buy a pair - they both have the same abuse on them so if one is bad..... can the other be far behind?
To all those who chose U-joints, you win... Went to the local auto parts, and picked up a set of u joints. I crawled under the car and one of the rear caps had NO bearings in it at all, I could move it all around with my hand. Got the new ones in, and it cruises like a dream. Thanks to all for the help Glen
About the only thing I have to give out would be two front hood reflectors off of a 1972 Ford F250. Oh ya, and a couple of really used U-Joints Glen
