hello i have an issue my mav sways like a boat it feels as if the rear tire is low just to let you all know i have rebuilt the front end swaped to disc off a granada put in 302 c4 all front end parts including springs the rear has new air shocks and just put new 215/60/14 all the way around and converted it to manual sterring with the adapter to rid my self of the controll valve i have a very good tight feel and has been alined drives true and straight my problem is that it just feels loose kind of sways if you push on the side of the mav the only swaying is the tires a friend said that it is setup up for bias ply tires not radials so i am kinda stumped if anyone needs more info on this issue let me know oh and the tire sayes 35# max and their at the max
I strongly suggest that you do not use air shocks. That area was not designed to support the weight of the car, and that is exactly what air shocks force it to do. They will punch right through the floor of the trunk. I would try getting new rear springs, shackles and bushings. My '69.5 has aftermarket rear shackles that raised the back of the car, and they caused the bushings back there to wear out. The car was very unstable and swayed all over the place. That said, these are old cars and aren't as aerodynamic as a new car. So if the car does get hit with a strong side draft, it's likely going to affect it more then a newer car. I know my '72 can be kind of a hand full on really windy days, especially driving down the interstate.
ive heard alot of bad things about rear air shocks in these cars and them punching up through the floor pan. *EDIT looks like jamie got it before me what kinda shocks you got up front? im assuming they were covered in the front end rebuild? my car had alot of sway to it above 50mph, turned out to be the lower ball joints which involved changing out the whole lower controll arm assembly as a unit. some people have also said that with the granada front spindles you also need granda outer tie rod ends, maybe your issue could be there?
am running air shocks on back of my 69.5 and have pulled a few heavy loads with it without any trouble so far. i only run about 30 pounds of air max so the springs catch the load pretty quickly. imho i think some folks run way too much pressure and cause the problems they have with the trunk pans. having said this i will go straight out and check my trunk pan lol.
We have beat the "air shock through the floor" issue to death in past threads. My Shocks ABSORB movement, but are not exerting any pressure. Air Shocks exert pressure, making them sort of solid, with limited movement only when forced upon. If you force it too hard, such as hitting a pot hole, speed bump, etc the shock will not ABSORB that pressure, but will push it toward it's attached ends. Bottom is attached to the axle, and the axle will not give. Top is attached to the thin metal of the trunk pan, which will puncture very quickly. Used them for a year or so, then recognized this and gave them away.
