After the motor warms up I'm getting a squeaking noise from the front of the motor and it does not go away after taking the alternator belt off which is my only belt that only runs alternator and water pump. The motor is low miles and the harmonic balancer is new 2 yrs ago I'm hoping it's not a front main bearing going out. or could it be timing chain noise , fuel pump is new car runs good just wondering if I need to rebuild before I spin a bearring.

I've never heard a bearing "squeek". Fuel pump eccentric maybe?

Have you replaced the PCV valve lately? Sometimes when they get old, they can get stuck open and it causes them to whistle/squeak. You can check this quickly by pulling the PCV valve out of the valve cover while the car is running (it will probably start stumbling and running a little rough when you do this), and stick your finger over the hole in the bottom of it (the engine should smooth back out when you do this because you are closing the vacuum leak). See if the noise stops when you do that.

Is it a constant squeak, or is it kind of intermittent? Could be a small exhaust leak, too.

thanks for the reply. checked everything suggested. Not the pvc valve the noise is definitly coming from the front of the motor. checked for header leaks not that, sounds to me like timing change or fuel pump eccentric. gonna put in timing change and eccentric next week. any ideas on which timing change to use. double roller or what do you guys like.

Check the water pump for a leak out of the weep hole. If it is leaking, or the bearing is bad, it will squeal, just like you described.

The squeek is probably coming from your fuel pump. They sometimes squeek when rebounding from compressing the spring. You can remove the pump and run the engine on what fuel is in the carb. If it doesn't squeek with the pump out then you know that the noise is coming from the pump. Then you can put the pump back in and know that you are not hurting anything.

ya thanks it,s the fuel pump. A fast id pulled the pump hot! put a rag over the hole, stared the motor ran the car till the cab went dry. That was it no squeak, it was never that much of a noise in the first place, but i can be perticular. But now that i have the money put away looking to do the timing chain. What do you gays like to use

The best performance timing chain is a double row double roller chain and sprocket. It is a thick chain with two rows of rollers that have a roller inside the rollers and then the pins for the links. If you don't mind the sound a step up in performance and accuracy then go to a double idler gear drive. They give the most accurate cam timing that is consistant throughout the rpm range and they don't stretch like a chain will.

yes I understand the double rolled timing chain and gears. have used them in the past on chevys but had a clearence problem with the timing cover that we overcame. will roller chain and gears be a problem? I hunt I fish I work on cars I fight in bars ha ha
