ive got a chance at a 4.11 8'' center section but its an open rear. aparently its original though. the guy wants $100 plus shipping im not sure if it'll be worth it or should i just hold out for a trac-loc? would this be a good gear for a mild v8 or maybe i could bolt it up to my 250 for the time being? its gonna be a 90% street car but just a cruiser, not a daily so gas milage isnt really a concern. any opinions? how much does a center weight anyway. just wondering what kinda shipping costs i'd have to look foward to thanks
Opinions on 4.11 street gears are going to be all over the place. Might want to try a rpm calculator where you input tire size etc so you can see if you can live with the cruise rpm. On shipping, I've found FEDEX is the best for packages up to 75 pounds. By the way, an 8" center will fit perfectly in a 5 gallon plastic bucket. I've shipped a couple. I forgot the weight (maybe 45 lbs). Had to write on the bucket "No Liquid" in big black magic marker so FEDEX would accept it. Cleaver
As for using them behind a mild engine... Don't do it. I had 4.11s in my car when I took out a radical 306 (that loved the 4.11s) and installed a stock 351c in it's place. Even the 351c, with it's reputation for being a high rpm engine, HATED the 4.11s in stock form! That car drove like a dumptruck. No kidding. The engine revved so fast from the gearing that it seemed like you had to shift every 10 feet! (wide ratio 4 speed) The engine fell on it's face before you went anywhere! If your engine is not ready to wind up and keep it up, don't go for those gears. Now, if you want to buy them to have the around for a future project, that's different and the price is not bad assuming they are not worn out. My .02, from experience. Check out my handle! I know the ratio of 4.11:1
the guy said he had it checked ou and it got a clean bill of health. im probably going with a stcok/mild 302 so it seems like 411's are gonna be a little too much i was gonna get it off a guy on fordpinto.com but if anyone wants his contact info PM me and i'll hook you up
How mild of a 302? You scared me when you said you wanted to put it behind an I6... or even a stock 302. Now, if you are talking about a 302 with a decent intake, headers, and a cam over 214@.050"... that is a mild 302, however it is a 302 that will run good with 4.11s. I ran one just like this, with a C4, roller rockers, T289, 700 Holley... In the light little 72, it ran hard with 4.11s. Most folks would consider that a mild 302... The cam, SP intake, and light car really made it happy to rev though.
ohh nah its cool man. i was kinda on the fence about it anyway thats why i made the post in the 1st place. im gathering the v8 swap parts now and a good ratio or trac-loc 8'' was one of the things onn my list. the engine is probably gonna be pretty mild so i was thining 4.11 probably wouldnt be my best bet. mild in that im probably not gona have it rebuilt. just get something healthy with low miles, mild carb and intake and headers. i was asking about the I6 just to see if throwing the 411's behnd my 250 would be any fun on the street untill i was ready to drop the 302 in. i never had a 302 car so i cant say that im the most famiular with their ins and outs and whatt works the best but from what ive read 4.11's on the street with the kinda engine i plan on throwing together might no be the best bet
3.40s would work well with a stock 6 IMO. 3.55s would do well with a very mild 302, and you may like them with a 6, but I have never tried that. So I have no opinion on 3.55s behind an I6. Sounds good though.
yea the 302 is just gonna be my spring project so whatever gear i invest in will be built arund that.
4.11s suck on a driver if you don't have an overdrive,60 mph will be very annoying.3.55s will turn about 2800@60 mph w/a tight converter and 225/70x14 tires.About 3000 if you run a stall.I'd go with 3.40 or even 3.25(do they make a 3.25 8"?)if I was gonna drive it on the highway alot.JMO
i think 4.10s/11s are over rated, if your engine cant turn that much RPM why try, i have 3.56 in my 9inch
yea im not trying to make a strip car but at the same time its not going to be a daily either. mostly just crusing main street on the weekends and going to local car cruises. maybe a trip to the track once or twice over the summer and the ocasional ricer beat down from a stop light
I'd say if it was a good deal, go ahead and snag it. You could always trade or sell it and get what you want at a later date.
Yeah, I had one in a 71 Torino originally equipped with 250/C4. Not a bad gear at all for highway. Gotta take into account though, the car was significantly heavier, and I was running 28" tall tires. So the Torino with 3.25s probably felt like a 2.79 does in a Maverick.
