I have finaly tried to change over from points to elc ingtion. I am using a distributor from a 76 maverick and putting it in my 73, 302 mav. I have limited wiring experince, and was graced with a "freind" who thought he knew what he was doing. I now have the red wire from the ingtion module going to the S side of the starter relay. He ran a restiance wire from the I side of the starter relay to what he thought was the ingtion wire(red/green). Where the restaince wire has three plugs in it, he connected the red/green wire (now 2 wires from being cut, to connect into two of the 3 outlets) and the white wire from the ingtion module now inhabits an outlet. Also somewhere along the way( I have no idea how) there is a white and black wire that does come from the voltage regulator, and now goes absolutely NO WHERE. he can not rember where it did go, if anywhere. I have a book that says it is the "feild relay terminal". I havent been able to find a wire that is even similar to reconnect this to. Nor do I know if it is even a wire that was ever connected, or needs to be.
Now when I try to start the car, it tries to start when the key is in the "on" postion. I do not even have to try and crank the car. I have no idea exactly what I am doing wrong, besides having a "freind" who says we'll be done in 2 hrs. I have wrestled this problem for a week solid now. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appriacted. Thank you in advance.

Hi NYY You seem to have your run or on wire that is suppose to go to the coil running to the starter relay, if I am understanding you correctly.

Understand I am looking at the wiring diagram for a 1974 Mercury comet that I downloaded from a site that I was refered to from a post on this board.

    1. The wh/bl wire that you refered to by this diagram goes to the alternator marked S, thatwire splits and is also part of the electric choke wiring.

    2. The red/green wire goes to the pos. side of the coil it already is a resistor wire.

    3. Check and make sure the red wire you refered to isn't dirty and it's not two color's. Do the same for the white wire can't find it either.

I'll go see if I can get the address for the wiring diagrams so you can get one for a 1973.

    good luck Mike

Also get a voltage meter to check which wires do what when you turn the key to the run position that is the wire that goes to the coil. Get someone to turn the key to the start position and check for voltage to go to the soliniod switch that sould go to terminal B.

The wire from the ignition switch to the coil is a resistor wire check with some that knows but if you run both it might reduce voltage again. If you are going to electronic you might not need a resisitor at all. I don't know but someone will.

The easiest and simplest way if it isnt too late, (havent cut the plugs off), is to go get the wiring harness from the car that you got the distributor and module from. Also get the coil. For the wiring harness, if you cut the outer tape off that holds the wires in a bundle, you will find that it connects the distributor, coil, and module together. Its all plug ins. Only thing left over will be a red and white wire from the module. Just tie these two together and hook them to a switched 12 volt source. Make sure this is a full 12 volt line and not the one that goes through the resistive wire or a ballast resister. The wiring harness will be the same for almost all late 70's - early 80's Fords with the duraspark ignition.

Police auction? Did you check under the seat cushions for drugs and guns?

nice looking, especially for a 4-door. I am not fond of many 4-doors.
