Got the old 200 and 3-speed pulled out of the Grabber this week! Haven't touched the car since I welded the floorpans in a few months ago. Car sure sets high up with no weight in front!
Low garage ceiling, sure didn't have much clearance to get the engine out! Didn't help that I had to set a piece of 2x8 under each front tire so the steering linkage would clear the feet of the hoist. Has anybody else had that problem?
m&m, did you pull the trany with the motor? that is how i did my 250 from my 73' grabber. i had to jack up the front of the car so the trans. could drop down to clear the firewall. had to do this outside. shop wasn't tall enough...frank...:bananaman :bananaman
No, I dropped the tranny out from underneath a couple nights ago. The 3-speed is alot easier to do that with than a C4 is since you unbolt it from the bellhousing. Since the tranny and bellhousing were off the motor, it was super easy to pull the motor. I did it by myself in no time, once I got the hoist through the doorway and under the car.
Hey Matt you may have already done this but if you jack up the back of the car you would be suprised at how much more clearence you would get over the radiator support. I have a garage ceiling that is about 7' 6" tall so I know what you're going through. Keep the progress reports coming. And yes you have to count the minivan!!!
I never thought of that Ward, but I suspect that will come in handy when I go to drop the 302 in. Of course, depending on when that's ready, the weather is probably going to be nice enough I can do it outside.
Matt, glad to see you are back at! I don't about the rest of you, but here in Ohio the weather had been in the single digits, and so cold. You don't even want to think about going out and picking up a wrench.
Is it easier to pull the trans and motor at the same time?? I want to keep my c4, replace the tired 302, debating if it would be easier to leave the tranny in and yank the engine, or pull both together, bolt the trans up to the new engine, then put it all back in.
I usually pull my motor and trans together. Mine is a stick, even if it was an automatic I would pull them as a whole. I think it is easier, faster and a better job when reinstalled. Dan
I'll attest to the fact that it's a PITA to install a C4 behind an engine in the car. Not all that easy to get to the bolts to remove it either. When I pull the 302 & C4 from the 77 I may try to pull them as a unit and see how it goes.
I read somewhere that it is easier to pull the two together, when the back end is raised a little to give you a better angle and clearance. Anybody try this before???
