When the engine is cold it will idle at up to 1200 RPM. Let it warm up before you try to tune. You may have the curb idle solenoid set too high also. You can check that after it warms up by unplugging it. The idle should drop to 500 or 600 RPM in neutral.

when i start the car the piece in the center of the carb. that opens and closes, it is not wide open but it is open enough for the the engine to rev REALLY high like it will blow up if i let it keep running. in my good Maverick i know what you are talking about because i have to let it warm up before the engine calms down. in my old maverick i have to hold the center piece in the carb. down just to have it idle normal to warm up. something in the carb. is not right like it needs adjusting. let me know what you think paul. where is the solenoid? Thanks

When you say "piece in the center" are you talking about the choke plate or the throttle plate?
If the throttle plate isn't being held closed by the return spring then you need to get that solved. Which carb are you using?

That is the choke plate and it is supposed to be adjusted so that it is closed when the engine is cold. If you are holding it closed to keep the engine from going too fast you are pouring raw gasoline down the bores of your engine which will cause wear on the rings, pistons and contamination of the oil that will ruin your bearings.
I don't remember - has this carb been rebuilt? You should have set the choke before installing it. Is the throttle stuck open or is the linkage out of adjustment?

Spend some time tuning the carb making sure the initial adjustments are right. Then try to start it. Your throttle is open too wide and your choke is out of adjustment. It sounds like the float level is wrong or the fload is bad (sinking). You might have the throttle held open instead of closed if you connected the linkage to the wrong side of the linkage.

The round rod is the float pivot point abd the brass chunk goes on top of the check ball in the accelerator pump passage to the nozzle.
Be sure to check and adjust:
    the choke level dry setting
the throttle stop screw initial setting
    Idle mixture screw initial setting
    Fast Idle screw initial adjustment
    choke initial setting
accelerator pump travel adjustment (to its maximum)
After you make sure the adjustment are right then you can bolt the carb on and do the fine tuning.
