ok im opening this thread up no to fight but to talk about what fluid you would use in a 1985 t5 transmmission. i will admit defeat and say im wrong if you are in fact supposed to use gear lube in this transmission .. i always thought you used atf.. 85 would be none world class right?

As much as I wish I could answer this question I cant. I have a c4 that was pieced together by Eagle Transmission for what reason i'm not sure. I gave them a Comet with a factory drivetrain and got back a frankenstein so I have found out. I say this cause I don't know what type fluid I should use... hope you get closer. :)

I use B&M Trick Shift ATF in my '93 T5. Not sure if it is the same as the '85, but the Trick Shift is the same as Mercon lll atf.

    From http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/349.shtml:

So, I guess it depends on which one you have. I don't know the validity of the year cutoffs between the NWC and the WC, but if yours is a world class, it calls for ATF, non world class needs gear oil.

In the heavy equipment field ATF and 10w oil has been used in BW truck three and four speed transmissions. ATF has been used without harm on automotive transmissions for decades. You can easily use ATF in any manual transmission a long as it is not used under heavy SHOCK loads.

I'm not smart enough to have a manual transmission, all that foot pushing and arm moving, makes me tired just thinking of it, and how are you suppose to eat a big mac while driving??

well i thought they didnt use the world class until 86 so if i had an 85 it would be non world class. it came out of a 1985 mustang gt..

I have no dog in the fight :D But knowing what and who I know. I would take Lonnie's advice over anyones on this board on this subject. (y)
You/he might have ruffled each others feathers.....but he has the knowledge and experience I would trust on these transmissions.

    *just my $.02 :)

I have 3 T5"s and always ran ATF in them. One of them is toast and i blamed it on high mileage but maybee i was putting in the wrong fluid I don't know.So i pulled the drain plug on a 85 T5 i have on the floor that is a real low milage trans and it has lightweight gear lube in,most likely original. So i guess it's possible the non w/c do take gearlube.

Put AMSOIL 80-90 weight and cover both fields, This is what all the Mustang T5S around here run.

he says non world class so i say gear oil. from what i under stand the bigest different between world class and non is world class uses needle bearing and non uses ball bearings. so atf is needed to get into the needle bearings. gear oil protects gear sets alot beter than atf can.
