I am thinking of buying this intake to put on an 86 Lincoln 302 that is going on my 72 daily driver. http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/7121/10002/-1 I was wondering if this would be good for a hotrod/ driver. If not I would appreciate suggestions for a proper intake
I noticed a few here don't like it. I have it and I have no complaints. Of course it's been a few years since I actually been able to drive the darn thing...
Your intake has to match the cam, heads, carb and they all have to be chosen for the RPM that you want to run your engine at. Since you say its a daily driver I am going to assume that the cam gets max HP at 5000 or under, your heads are iron and have stock valve sizes and you don't plan on running it over 5500 RPM with a 600 to 670 CFM carb. If your engine fits in that catagory then the Performer was made for you. If you have aftermarket heads and a cam with 214 or more SAE duration and .490 or higher lift and you plan on running it up to 6500 RPM then you need to have an intake that will flow more air and is tuned to operate at the higher RPM than the Performer. Under those conditions a Performer intake will hold you back.
Go with the RPM, it'll work great on your motor. It works from idle to 6500 rpms, contrary to what the advertising says. It'll also allow room for future upgrades, where the Performer won't. The Performer's nothing more than a clone of the 83-85 Mustang 5.0 intake.
I have had mine up to 7000+ and ate the stangs I was up against--, with a 700dp and points. I didn't win every time cause I couldn't do it from the line only at a20mph take off...
That's the intake I have on my Comet. Works great with the Holley Street Avenger Carb (570cfm). I drive mine on the street all the time....
On a stock engine, the "Performer" will give somewhat of a performance boost. The "Performer RPM" is a better choice for higher lift cam and better flowing heads and headers. My preference is the "RPM Air Gap" it will really give some better results with the afore mentioned modifications, as well as being compatable with other mod's in the future. Deeper rear gears will help all around performance but may hurt mileae a bit. Also the Air Gap may not clear the hood on some vehicles. The engine is a big air pump with some fuel and spark added to it, to burn and cause rotation of the crankshaft. To put a high flow intake such as the Victor Jr. or Sr, on tennie weenie flowing heads, cam and 1 /58 diameter headers, is just not a workable combo. The "RPM" is a great manifold for lot's of applications, go for it in my opinion. One more thing, don't expect great fuel mileage from any minor add on's such as small or large four barrell carbs and aftermarket intake, etc. Mainly because just having them on there, will tempt you to mash the pedal to the floor more often just to satisfy your need for more power and justify the money spent on them. But that is what they are for so mileage is going to suffer if it is done regularly. But that is why it is called Hot Rodding. Good luck with your build and keep us informed to results.
I haven't bought a new intake in MANY years, but my neighbor just got a Weiand Stealth and the quality was the best I have ever seen on a new intake. Awesome! From the Edelbrocks I have seen new, they are decent quality, so I am not knocking them very hard. If you are considering a "knock-off" intake from eBay or Summit, do some checking, the word is that the quality is HORRIBLE. Someone posted pics here, of an RPM knock-off, and there was misaligned ports among many other problems.
