ok does anyone know what the biggest size tires i can use . i mean width and height , not rim size. i dont really want to a mini tub or anything.. i was thinking a 235-50 or something along those lines. anyone went bigger with no problems?

do a search on this topic. it has been well covered. i personally run 275/60/15 on the rear with a rolled fender lip. most people stick to 255 or smaller to avoid rolling the fernder lip.

I got away with 245/60 on the rear, when I went to 255/60, I rubbed just a little on takeoff.

But if you change the backspacing a 1/4", you could make the 255s work. Maybe the 2745s.

    Those were on 15X8 Cragars.

There are too many variables with each of our cars, tire brand and model, and rim model, and all will affect what will fit.

I think the 245/60r15 would be a safe bet, even though you could squeeze more in there if you wanted to experiment with the other dimensions.

I've been shopping for tires, and it's amazing how the same size tires made by 2 different manufactures can differ in size.

well the thing is i want a wide tire like a 245 or something but i don't want all the sidewall....... so im not sure what to go with for the middle number. i don't want nothing stupid low profile but i just don't like alot of sidewall. a 245 is wide enough... any suggestions

Then you should look into something like 245/50 or 245/45 on a 17" rim or so...

Get on a site with a tire calculator and figure out what rim will fit a 50 tire and give you around 26-27" diameter. Anything less than 26" and it will look to small (in my opinion).

I got my rims with 235 or 245/50 tires on them and they looked way too small, and all the stuff under the car rubbed on the ground. So I think you need tires that get you around 26" diameter to get you the ride hight you need, and shrink down the profile but increase the rim diameter to keep you near 26".

Just put a new set of 275/60r15's M/T Drag Radials on 8X15 Weld Draglite wheels with 4 1/2 backspace. Absolutely no rubbing at all. I was previously running the same size tire with 10" wide wheels and had some rubbing. The 8" wheels pulled the tread width in just perfect to give me the needed clearance. Oh, my wheel lips are rolled too.
I need to post pics with the new wheels. I really like em! :)

The green Comet below has 265/50/15s, but the tires are Coopers and that brand runs a bit smaller than some other brands.

I am running stock offset 15x8.5 Wheel Vintique Magnums on the back and with a 1/4" spacer, the inboard raised letters barely rub on a small patch of wheel tub when going up a steep driveway entrance. I rolled the wheelwell lip and section the chrome trim and with the correct offset or wider axle, I could get at least another inch of section width in there and not have anything rub.

Yes, your setup is what made me decide to take a chance on them. I was considering dropping down to 255's. Very glad now that I didn't. (y)

A 15x8 with a 4" back space will allow a 275-60x 15 to fit in the rear fender well with out rubbing? I am buying a new set of wheels soon, 15x7's front and 15x8's rear and want to fill the fenders with tires. My front tires will be 225-60x15's.
408w-maverick, what size/offset rims are you running?
    Thanks, Ken

with the 15x8 rims i gave you with the car, they had 3.75" back spacing.. with that back spacing the 255 60 15 should fit fine.

    Ken,
Blown76Mav and I are both running 4 1/2" backspace with 8" wheels...not 4". We are both running the 275's with no rubbing. That's no guarantee that you won't have any problems. You'll be on your own so you might want to get a local wheel dealer to hep you out if you are unsure.
