ok i was thinking instead of going 9inch ... does anyone know if they make better axles for the 8in rear ends. or if they dont will my 4:11 gears and mini spool fit in a 9 inch rear end. if anyone has a link to some aftermarket 8in axles let me know..
Your 8 inch axles will fit in a 9 inch rear with the proper housing ends. I believe the mini-spool will work in a 9 inch but the carrier, differential and gears will not. If you are going with aftermarket axles I would consider going with a higher spline count. I am sure Moser Engineering http://moserengineering.com/index.html, Strange Engineering http://www.strangeengineering.net/index.html can make axles for you.
Your going to need to make a decision about how much power you want the rear to handle. If it is a lot then you can either build a 8 inch now and a 9 inch later. Or build a 9 inch and be done with it. For 8 inch upgrades look at Currie
if you really look into it deep, the 8 inch 28 spline axles are just as strong as the 9 inch 28 spline, and a lot of the gears found inside a ford 8 inch are the exact same gears found in an 8 inch.... I guess what I am saying is you can build an 8 inch rear to be just as strong as a 9 inch for MOST intends and purposes, and save a 100 pound to boot. This is considering that you aren't going to be putting some outragious 650 - 700 HP engine in the car.
8 inch well im not turnign it int oa full drag car and it will prolly never see 600 horse. it does not need it on the street. so im gonna build the 8 inch. so what axles do i need. just 28 sline axles.? any suggestiions
If you got to buy i'd go ahead and get 31 splines. I'v saw eight inch rears crack the housing at the spring perch and never break the internals. I'v had real good luck with moser axles.
With an 8 inch your only choice will be 28 spline. Call Moser Engineering and they can make you a set. There is a worksheet on their site for ordering. They can even make you a driveshaft.
Currie can build any spline count axle you want. My 31 spline axles will fit in a 8 inch housing, Although i have never saw a carrier for the 8 inch with more than 28 spline. I'm not saying you cant get one, Just Ive never saw one. The 8 inch will support about 350 HP with sticky tires, Then you will blow the caps off the housing. (Ask me how i know). Build a 9 inch and forget about it, Then your weak link will be somewhere else. (1310 U JOINT)
the mini spool i put in there is a 28 spline. the diff shop here in davenport can make axles to fit for about 500 i think
Not trying to be a smart a$$,we've only had this discussion 500 times, read what it says under actionrpm.....put a 9" in it and be done with it,save your money.......30 years experiance.
