Was trying to start the Mrs' 75' the other day and she wouldn't start and kept throwing flames out of the carb. I know #1 cyl is on the way out but had it running a day or so before. The problem is that when I shut the key off the motor kept trying to crank. Had to pull the Pos wire which was hot as HEdoublehockeysticks when I pulled it. Any idea what caused the overcranking? Could it be the starter is gone? Any advice or ideas would be welcomed and sifted through for accuracy(LOL).

Especially when they get hot. Use larger battery cables and starter cable to prevent it in the future. If it is blowing back through the carb you have a lean backfire. Close the choke and crank it.

I've had this EXACT problem and had to pull the cable as you mentioned. It's a starter solenoid. :thumbs2:

it also could be most likely the ignition switch on the streering column or the key cylinder mechanism staying stuck in the start position and not returning to the RUN position !!!!! it happenned to me on both my mavericks... WD40 will work sometimes

Take your starter off and bring it in to have it checked. It could be the appendix is going out.

Didn't you get that engine yet? To replace it?

Small cables and poor connections generate heat. Heat is bad for the contact discs in the solenoid and bad for the field and armature windings. Most starter problems are generated by the use of cables that are too small. Cables should be at least 4 ga. but in most fords (due to the connections and distance between the battery, solenoid and starter) the cables should be 2 ga at least. The solenoid should probably be replaced because it has welded once but if the proper cables and clean connections are used it is unlikely to happen again for some time.
