I got an e-mail with the subject line of Hi. It had an attachment. The "sender" was "mavtricks@yaho*" it looked suspicious so I didn't open it. Shawn Simpson has the same e-mail address so I send a direct e-mail to Shawn and asked him if he had sent it. and he replied that he hadn't, and to delete it. Which I did. so keep you eyes open, someone eles is using that "name" as an imposter. Russ
He could have sent it and not even know it if his comp is infected. Most virus's attach themselves to your email program and send the virus to everyone in your address book without your knowledge.
I recieved an alert message from Mcafee anti virus about that. They said that the virus will go into your contacts list for your email, then it will send itself to your contacts in the form of an email from you with the subject being " Hi". If you recieve ANY emails with "Hi" as the subject DO NOT open them ...simply delete them. The best thing to do is send an email to all of your contacts telling them that you will NOT be sending ANY emails with the subject as " Hi " and warning them of the virus.
Yeah.. if you guys have Anti Virus software update it now! It's amazing how many updates are put up all the time - virus guys show no mercy! Protect yourself... Here's an old link Stefan posted with some free software: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1242&highlight=virus -Corbin
Someone with an infected computer has Russ' and Shawn's email in their inbox or address book. The virus or worm then reads all the email addresses it finds and randomly selects a "to" and "from" to send a copy of the virus or worm. At the moment, Im getting many e-mails per day with the W32.Mydoom.B@mm worm. All infected computers will launch an attack against Microsoft and SCO unix in February http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.mydoom.b@mm.html Everyone needs to install an anti-virus scanner and update the virus definitions on a WEEKLY basis in order to stay current. You can get Norton Anti-Virus, which autmatically updates itself, on Ebay for less than $10! http://search.ebay.com/search/searc...layout=3&from=R2&sacategory=1505&BasicSearch=
Sender If anyone gets an e-mail from me, it will have my name Shawn Simpson as the sender, not mavtricks@yaho*..........Please be carefull, and feel free to write and ask like Russ did if your not sure. Better safe than sorry!
IMHO Norton is far and away the best Virus scan software available. I received virus updates on the Hi virus last week and yesterday on the Mydoom virus. It may be more expensive than most programs but it's never let anything infect my system.
Not sure which Virus it was, but i got a mother of a virus yesterday. I was downloading something, with Norton Antivirus on Autoprotect. All the sudden a window pops up saying that a virus has been detected and quarantined, so I thought I was ok. Wrong!! It got worse and worse over the next few hours, it permanently damaged Norton Antivirus and killed my internet connection. Think I'm gonna have to format my hard drive. I'm not that mad, because I was getting ready to format my old one and put a new one in anyways lol. This just motivates me to finally do it. But beware guys, if you get this one, I don't think there's any saving you, even Norton didn't protect me from this one.
I use Norton AntiVirus too... the 2004 version. I got an e-mail on Monday that contained the Novarg virus. Norton sent up a window alerting me that a virus was in an e-mail attachment. I did'nt even open any of the e-mails. I deleted all of them. Norton also quarentined the infected e-mail. I then opened Norton and deleted the quarentined e-mail. According to Norton, that is supposed to permanently remove it from the hard drive. I have had no problems with the computer and all scans show the virus is not there. If anyone here does not have any anti virus programs protecting thier computers, by all means get one. It is well worth the price to keep these virus creating jack a**es out of our computers. This type of low-life should be shot.
If anyone is looking for a cheap (FREE) email scanner download AVG 6 Version at this address. http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php It is totally free and will do an excellent job and wont slow your system down like Norton AV. Granted Norton is a great scanner but it is over blown now. It uses up to much memory for what it does. Also, Norton AV is a major target for virus creators. They specifically write virus' that will shut down Norton and infect the system. I have fixed to many of these systems. I no longer use Norton for these reasons. If I need an virus cleaning tool, Norton is the first I go to but I will no longer recommend the entire program. AVG 6 is an excellent program and updates are coming out almost daily for it but like all AV programs, you MUST update it frequently. If you decide to download AVG, make sure you get the free version and not the trial version. Trial version will require a fee after 30 days....Free version is good for as long as they support it. I run over 400 computers on AVG and have not had an infection in the last 2 years and it runs wonderful on older slower systems. If you want to speed up the system you have now, uninstall Norton and see how much better it runs. I think the current version of Norton takes about 20+mb of ram just for it to be running in the background on an XP machine. Oh...watch out for AVG 7 if you are running windows 95\98\ME. It has been known to cause BSOD and lockups (version 6 (free)does not have these problems). Seems to run great on XP. I wont even discuss Mcafee here......ugh! Sorry, this was a lot longer than I planned.....
A good friend of mine that works in the Tech Support department of a very reliable local ISP recently turned me onto AVG. This is some really great software. The free version is good but I went ahead and got the full registered version and it updates daily and sometimes once in the morning and once after dinner. So far it has caught and killed the Hi virus from every contact that I have (over 60) and it killed that doom one as well. I would highly reccomend this software to anyone. The onlything is that while the full system scan is running it will slow up your system a little bit. My advice for dealing with this is to get up refill your coffee cup or grab another beer, take a leak or a camping trip in the restroom and the scan should be done by the time you get back and your system will be running virus free and at its normal performance leve.
Bumping this up again.... Make sure to update everyday if you can. I neglected to do so for about 3-4 days, and I noticed my computer was being a little strange. I updated and ran a full scan and it turned out that I had about 5,700 files infected with I-Worm/Netsky.C Man..glad those are gone. Only a couple days with out updating, and bam - 5700 files!! -Corbin
