has anybody tried one of these it seems like a good and cheap way to lose that static fan.. and not as expensive as an electrical if anybody has pics of experiences with this please post them
Nothing wrong with a clutch style fan. Beware though there are two types, one uses a thermal clutch, the other is a low speed. The low speed cuts out at some point in the rpm range, it's intended to work only at low speeds, as in around town-in-traffic. The thermal comes on when the engine compartment reaches a certain temperature.
do yall know of any clearance problems with it and do you know any cars that i can get a "low speed" styled clutch fan from?
It has been shown that the early 90's 3.8L Taurus fans are a great fit for these cars with very little massaging being done to make them fit. These fans can be had for $10-$30 usually, and most junkyards are practically overflowing with these Tauruses. I'd strongly suggest just going with one of those. If you can't find one locally, then I'm sure someone on here can help you out and get you one. I believe mean maverick said he plans to pick up a few extra in case someone on here needs one.
and you are talking about the electric fan right? what do yall do for the high amperage of the electrical fan system?
You can get a clutch fan from many applications. Ford pickups & vans are two. The clutch itself can be bought new from your local parts house for about $50
Yes, electric. To me, electric is the only way to go. I run an electric fan on my '72, and there is no way I would ever go back to a pulley driven fan, be it a clutch fan or not. As long as you don't have a huge stereo system or something, I doubt you will have a problem with the electrical system. The amperage only spikes for a split second when the fan kicks on, and then drops when the fan is running. Plus the fan will not be running 100%, or probably even 50% of the time. Just get a good relay and fan controller. You have to get the correct fan that fits on the clutch. If you are going to spend 50 bucks on a new clutch, plus another 10 or 20 on a fan to fit it out of the junk yard, why not just go electric?
you know what i think i will are there any articles explaining how to wire the electric fan? i just got the aluminum radiator that Cid was selling ...will that change anything with installation?
Clutch fans work great until they don't work great any more. When they start slipping and you try to find out what it is and you go through the radiator and the thermostat and the water pump and.... finally figure out that the fan is going bad and you have to replace the clutch they aren't so good anymore. Oh! and don't rev your engine too high or you will be replacing it sooner than you like. I like the flex fans because they move a lot of air at low speeds and at high speeds where you don't need the fan they don't move as much. They don't go bad and they can turn as fast as your street engine does.
ok ill probably go with what PaulS said but just out of curiosity do i need the 3G upgrade to run the electrical fan?
