bananamanI was looking at a Mav that was for sell and noticed a T-bird rusting away in front of this old guys shop. The car was a little too much for me but then I asked the guy what he was going to do to the old bird? He said he planned on taking it to the crusher and I asked if I could buy the lights and wiring out of it?? He said if I take off what I needed that he would sell them to me for $15.00!!! I wasted no time getting them off and back home with me!! The chrome is not that great and the lenses are faded but I've been wanting a set for a long time. Anyone got pics of how to install these in a Maverick? Thanks!! Scott
I think so but I did get all the trim including the grill going over the lights and the aluminum(?) piece around the outside of the taillight also. I've been looking at pics of other cars and there seems to be a variety of setups on them. Scott
What year Bird? The Shelby style 65 Bird lights? Man, no matter what, you got a great score. If you can't find decent chrome trim for them, you could always black out the tail panel and bezel, for a Grabber inspired look. Also, the lenses are probably the cheapest part of the deal... You can run the faded ones for a short while and pick up the replacements after shopping around for a decent price. The chrome, buckets, and sequential controls are the high dollar parts from what I see. Great score Dave
Just a little tip for the faded lenses.Rough them up with some fine scotchbrite pads and spray a coat of clear on them. Will bring them up like new again (depends on how badly faded they are) Did this with my 64 Truck and my Dad's 67 Cougar works great!!
A tip on the buckets: If the reflective material is going/gone, behind the bulbs... You can bring the lights back closer to original brightness by painting the inside of the buckets white. As opposed to getting them rechromed or leaving them bare. I would use some gloss white that can stand some heat, and apply it very shortly before installing the buckets, to keep the paint crisp and clean as possible.
Dave, I took some of the 2" wide aluminum tape you can get at the hardware store and covered the entire area with it. It's fairly easy to trim and looks like chrome so it's very reflective. Worked out great.
I was wondering about something like that Ray. After I typed that post, I was thinking "I wonder if there is a way to get aluminum foil to stick?"...
Thanks for the tips guys!! I've been cleaning up the parts today and they have turned out pretty good. The chrome cover has a few pits but it shined up real good and the lenses have darkened with a few spiderweb cracks. I'm not sure of the year but the lenses say 64T..fomoco on them. Dave and Ray, the reflective material is gone but both your ideas are great!! I'm still not sure how to mount these lights so if anyone has some tips for this, please let me know!!
