I dunno, I always seem to go the opposite way from everyone else on this topic, but I like the power steering in my '72. Of course, I replaced everything when I had the car apart and tightened up the steering gear somewhat. On the other hand, the system (in general) does tend to be leak prone and I can see why someone would want to chuck it...

When these cars come stock with manual steering, the gearbox is geared REALLY slow. Seriously, a Maverick with stock manual steering feels about the same as a modern car with today's 'road feel' power steering.
Really easy to turn. It just takes alot of turns to get lock to lock.
Add to that, the big stock steering wheel, for alot of leverage...

That said, if you swap to a quick geared box from a p/s car, you can turn the wheels lock to lock fast... as long as you are moving. If you are sitting still or in a tight parking situation, then you better be ready to put some muscle into it.

...why do they call it "parallel parking" anyway? You are not parking beside another car; what you are actually doing is "Serially parking" it. Makes you wonder.

OK, so I have too much time on my hands right now.....

I have manual in my car, and it is fine. I would like to have a power steering gear when this one is done.

I have had both Power Steering and Manual steering in both the V8 and the I6, The power steering in these cars JIMHO is too easy to turn the wheel. Driving that I6 back from Florida the day I bought it I sneezed and wound up 3 lanes over from where I started :rofl2:.

I like the regular/stock Manual steering better, but once you really get used to the power steering and how it feels it's not too bad, I just don't like it because you really do not feel the road at all. I mean my Full size Dodge 1500 witha V8 and new power steering has more resistance (harder to turn than either of my power steering Mavericks and probably about the same resistance as my old Manual steering 6 cyl grabber that I hd years back.

I have one Mav with power and one manual with power box, and I really like the feel of the manual steering, but like the ease of the power at low speed. I don't plan on switching either of those, but my 70 Grabber, I'm not sure what I want to do - it has power now.

On another note, if you thought Mav power steering was too easy to turn, my dad's 64 Fairlane power steering has even less resistance! It's all part of the old car experience. :)

probably because your car spends more time standing still there then your actual driveway lol

My Grabber and Sprint are both Manual and I always thought I liked them. The Stallion has power steering and I think I like it better. It still drives like a Maverick though. You kind of see saw back and forth. Its relaxing..

that is the...wiggly valve...it has to be ...moved...in a left/right movement before it diverts fluid to the cyl. in that direction... that's the part i didn't like...:yup:
