My response would be "Oh, you find the Comet huerous huh, Well to each his own go get lost in the sea of Mustangs, and or Camaros. but I'd wager at the end of the day Mine will be one of the few that you'll actually remember!
I used to get the same thing at the drag strip with my 71 Grabber. For about the first year that is. Then when I finaly became one with the car and knew exactly how it was going to act at any given time it seemed that everyone jockied around so they diddnt have to line up next to it. It wasnt the fastest thing in the world but it ran 7.37 @ 94 1/8 mile every time it went down the track. So now they look at every Mav and Comet in a different light. If others dont like them then F$*k um'. I get ask all the time why with me being a Ford guy that I dont have a Rustang. And the answer is always because everyone else has one. I like to stay off the beaten path. Just shrug off the apparent Mustang/Camaro owner and just laugh at him, because he hasnt even got the directions to a clue much less have one.
Well ... there's usually a crowd around my car at shows ... so the numb nuts can't see it and make any stupid remarks ....
I was at a car cruz last year and this guy in the crowd yeld out - -In a smart a$$ way-- My grandma had a maverick haaa haaa, I looked right at him and said...AND YOU LOVE HER TOO... he looked just like this
Nice comeback. I used to work with this jackass that got in the habit of calling my Comet "that Vega" (probably because of the four taillights and fastback) ... until I took him for a ride in it. He just about crapped himself (not a car guy...). It was respect after that. A friend who is now 35 (again, not a car guy) had no recollection of Mavs and Comets. First time he saw mine, he asked "what's that?" Some people just don't have a clue. He was mind-boggled when a mid-80s Monte Carlo SS couldn't keep up with it in an impromptu stoplight drag. The look from the Monte's driver was priceless. His girlfriend was riding shotgun, too. I am OK with the fact that these cars don't get a ton of respect. Keeps the sleeper aspect alive, something I love about my car.
There seems to be a lot of anti-mustang sentiment on this thread. As a Mustang owner I have to say I've noticed a lot of animosity toward the Mustang crowd, when more likely than not the aforementioned guy was probably a Chevy guy. They are Fords too you know... Jason
The anti-Mustang sentiment is not anti-Mustang, but anti-attitude. Go to a car show and see how many Mustang owners scoff at Mavericks, while we Maverick guys are admiring their Mustangs - Mavericks are kind of like step-kids in their eyes. Many have the attitude that if it isn't Mustang, then it's junk. This is probably true for every make/model out there. But, this isn't true for all Mustang owners because I know people that own both Mustangs AND Mavericks. :Handshake
Naw I don't think it's meant to be Anti Mustang, just anti Status quo I for one, plan to trade my Focus off next year on my First Mustang, But there is definately a lot of respect to be earned by our cars, look in the Mags lots of Fords of different types but still farily far an few between for Mavs, and by the way when is that last time you saw our Comets in a mag? Use Pinks as an example, you see everythign from Hondas to Old vans but have you yet seen them spotlight a Mav or Comet? They are out there too, because we've seen them... frustratingly it is usually in " speeded up segments where they show them winnowing the chaff.
I 100% agree with you but if someone is presenting a ride at a show, they obviously want people to see, enjoy and/ or appreciate. If someone really didn't care, it would be with my car in the parking lot or back home in the garage. If I don't know you, my hood stays down. I Just don't care one way or another for someones opinion I do not know.
When sitting at the car show a numb nut walks by, ha ha ha ha.... a maverick... ha ha ha......... Like it dont have no business being there. What do yall do? Just let it roll off like a rain drop on a finely waxed Maverick Get used to it because it won't be the last time you'll hear something stupid come out of a non-car guys mouth. Ken
I was at a car show here in southern Ontario. The guy parked beside me had a beautifully restored 50 something ice cream truck I commented to him how nice it was and that it was nice to see different vehicles at the shows. The truck got alot of attention and the owner turned out to be a real jerk,as he would not stop sitting on the front fender of my car. After the 6th time asking him to stop, I told him to f...... off and left the show. I will never go back to that particular show.
Jealously causes people to act crazy. Unless your car should not be for show, some people say some things they shouldn't because they are jealous. Some times we take them wrong. "A Maverick" Most of the time its the car they will remember the most and talk about at dinner! I own a first place winning red 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with a 351 4V automatic, restored, all stock. What do I here? No 428 Cobra Jet, why bother? Most of these people do not own a Mustang at all, just the magazines! I drive my Mach 1 home with an award almost every time. I have not gone home from a show with my Maverick Grabber without some kind of award. Most people love the car. One guy followed me all the way to a show just to look at my Maverick and ask if I would sell. He gave me his number! Ignore the bad show talk, and enjoy your car!! Joe
In my daily work, I deal with the general public in a retail store setting, usually dozens of people in a day. There are all kinds of folks out there, 75% of them nice and 25% that lack social skills and/or intelligence. Keep in mind that the idiots out there are in the minority, even though they seem to make a big impression. I am lucky in that I do not work directly for the retailer that I do service work for, and don't have to kiss up to the folks that I don't want to. They are usually answered back in the same tone and attitude that they present to me. If someone is overly aggressive with me, and I meet them with equal force, they tend to go away quickly and probably seek out someone a little more timid to pick on. It is a form of bullying. I would probably turn the conversation around to the greasy t-shirt that they are wearing or their lack of dental care and then ask them what car they have in the show. Odds are they don't have one.
