Does anybody know a good way to remove the axle shaft seals. I am going through a 5 lug rear to swap into the Grabber and am having a hell of a time trying to remove these seals. They are too deep in the axle housing, it seems, for me to get any leverage with a normal hook type seal puller to get them out. Any suggestions?
I always mutilated them with a straight slot screwdriver. Just drive it through the sides and pry. Eventually they always come out.
big screwdriver or goto sears and get a seal puller...I have one of theirs and I use it to get the seals out of mine...works good. Robert
I rented a slide hammer from the local parts store. Used the vice grip screw adapter to hook the hammer to pliers. Bent out a portion of the seal, attached the hammer & she came out with one good smack. I wish I owned one of these things, it would save the trip to the store to rent. Good luck
I had a friend that had a tool that you put in and, just like the slide hammer, give it a good whack and they come right out. Not sure what it was called and he's no longer with us.
Its called a seal and bearing remover. if you are talking about the toggle type puller - a cross piece that swivels to be small enough to get behind the seal and then lays flat against the back of the seal or bearing race so you can pull it with the slide hammer. They are used quite often on Chebbies.
