Hey guys, i have a 73 comet gt which has the medium sized bumper. I've seen people do it, but i cant figure out how to do it myself. I wanna push the bumper back so it doesnt stick out so far. We've pounded and pounded, even tried heating the rubber inside, nothings budging. Any tips?

The bumper is the same size as the 70-72. The brackets are what is different.
You need to find you some earlier brackets and you will also have to change the filler panel that goes behind the bumper.

are you talking about the front or rear

the rear is thesame as the 70-72's but the front is unique to 73

if you want to push the rear in just get the 70-72 brackets, the front will take a little more effort

Actually, the 73 front bumper is different (larger) than the 70-72. I believe the way people push these bumpers back is by moving the brackets back on the frame. Search bumper slide or bumper push and you should find what you are looking for. As for the rear bumper, it is basically the same as 70-72, but has different brackets that pop it away from the body. If you want to push that one in, you'll need the rear brackets from a 70-72, and to take off the lower bumper filler pieces from the 73. Hope this helps.

Where do i find the thing you were talking about? The thing you said to search for. Could i also just drill into the frame and slide it back and rebolt it farther back? Seems like that might be easier..

or even possibly sliding the mounts back in the frame, and instead of drilling holes, just weld it in place at the seam. Would that be a possibility?

Don't even think to push the bumber back with acceleration and heavy wall :D

I think easiest way is taking the brackets off. There are three bolts on both sides. Bolts may be rusty.. http://robottiprojekti.googlepages.com/puskurimaassa.jpg/puskurimaassa-full;init:.jpg

Take everything inside the bumber off(rubber and heavy iron item) just leave the chrome part as it is.

Then weld new brackets to the frame(just use iron staff? rod? don't know the word in english).
bent those 90 degrees and bolt the bumber back.

I can take more pictures if you wan't to.

Either of those could work, but the welding one is, well.... a little too permanent - for my taste, anyway. To use the search function, scroll to the top of this page, or any page on this board, and look for the search button on the lower right of two blue bars running horizontally across the top. Use that to search for bumper slide, for example.

You don't have to weld new DIY brackets to frame. If you don't want do permanent change, you can always use the old holes to keep that iron staff there :) We weld those because the bumbers was the smallest problem in the car back then.

Hey, Trey! Are you keeping the GT now? I hope so.... Good luck on moving the bumper back. I unbolted the brackets from the frame & moved them back. Bolted them back on to the frame. Used a filler panel from a 72 Comet...

Was cutting involved for you to move the bumper back? are you still running the reinforcement rail?
