Nice to see somebody close by! Not sure what if anything will swap from that year 'chero. Look for the bump in the rear housing and see if you can get a socket on the lower two bolts of the pumpkin. If the socket fits, it's probably an 8" rear, the 9" requires a wrench for those bolts. where's there a ranchero in Cherry Hill?????

I believe that a 78 Ranchero would be based on the LTD II. I have gotton quite a few 9 inch rears out of those LTD II's for stock cars, that I have built, but they will be way too wide for a Maverick/Comet. They could be cut down though.

what is involved with cutting the rear down, is it worth it? would I need to get new axles? It looks like the front disc brakes may fit on the mav, any clues to know for sure?
    thanks

From what I have read, by the time that you pay to have the rear cut down and purchase new axles, you might be better off just buying an aftermarket rear. Both options will cost though. The front discs won't work. Completely different style spindles. Look for a disc brake Maverick/ Comet or a Granada/Monarch and everything will bolt right on. Some Granada/Monarchs came with 9 inch rear also. The rears are only 1 inch wider per side and will bolt right up to the leaf springs. Some also came stock with rear disc brakes.

    Good Luck (y)

Any year Maverick with discs, of course.

There are also various other Fords, earlier than your 78, that will swap spindles/discs with a Maverick.
Rancheros and Torinos will swap at least to 71.
After that, it is unlikely, but I don't know for sure.
If you had access to an interchange manual, you could check and see if the 78 Ranchero spindles will swap to a 71. If so, they should swap to a Maverick. Like I said, it is very unlikely, but I would have said the same about 71 Ranchero being interchangeable with a Mav not too long ago.
Before an interchange manual was checked...

If that Ranchero has dual sport mirrors, they will be dual remote controlled. If all the stuff is there, and in good condition, you could either sell them to someone that needs that exact set. The bring a few bux.

OR try them for fit on your car, as is, if you don't have Mav specific sport mirrors. They just may work decent. Never tried it. Often the bases of the mirrors are different from car to car.

OR you can take the 'bullet' section (top half) off the base (bottom half) of the passenger mirror, and it will bolt up to the base of the Maverick sport mirror. The benefit here is that you can make some minor, well thought out, mods and convert your Mav sport mirror to remote control on the passenger side. This mod, while simple if you have the tools, and a little mechanical ability... is not a beginner mod.
You have to have tools, mechanical ability, and plenty of patience to do this right. Just because of the remote cable being involved and it is relatively fragile.

There is very little else that would be usable for a Mav.
Again, if you have plenty of tools and patience to do it right, you could possibly swap certain luxury options over. But this is not interchange. Rather it is totally custom work. But I have heard of folks using gauges, tilt steering columns, and cruise control out of full size Fords.
Again, these are not direct bolt in mods!

    "1975-1980 Granada/Monarch"

Keep in mind that there were Granada/Monarchs also built in 1981 & 1982 but stay away from them. They are based on the Fox chassis and are a strut car. Completely different.

"Also Rancheros and Torinos will swap at least to 71"

1972 and up, the Torino was changed in the front end design and won't work. The coil springs were now mounted between the front a-frames like a full size LTD. They also changed over from leafs to coil springs in the rear. Remember that this version of the Torino is what evolved into the LTD II/Later version Ranchero so unless something changed back to the old style, I wouldn't think it would work for 78 but double check anyway. Look at the way the front ends are designed. Our front springs are mounted in the tower on top of the upper a-frames. For the disc spindles to swap to the Maverick, the car would have to be designed for this style to begin with.

    Good point.
No shock towers probably means no fit...

I don't know what that stuff goes for where you are...
Here, the stuff is getting in the yards less and less. Old cars like this are going straight to the shredder, no passing go, no sitting in the yards.

When it does get in the yards, front brakes go for 50-100 bux, and the rear runs 100-150. That is from a regular yard. If it's a U-pull, the stuff is quite a bit cheaper, but it's a big hassle IMO.

So around here, we would laugh at dude asking 500 bux.
However, it seems that these cars are harder to find in some parts of the country, so that might be a deal where you are.
Personally, I think you could hold out for a rust bucket with front discs and get the whole car for that money or less. Then you would have all the 5 lugs stuff you could want, and maybe some extras. When it's all over, you still have some scrap money coming.

if it does truly come with everything you need that could vary well be a good deal. i dont think i could find any of that stuff locally myself

i wouldnt throw money at a 9'' unless you planned on making some serious power, well above stock

There's a u-pull it yard in Tabernacle (Friendship auto salvage) that has quite a few Mavericks in it. I don't remember off the top of my head whether they are 5 lug and disc specifically but it'd be worth checking into. I may be heading out there this weekend of your interested in going. One warning, the guys think everyhting they have is worth it's weight in gold..... but you can negociate with them. Check U-Pull-It in Berlin as well, bt there isn't quite as much older stuff left in there...
