I have an alternator wiring question. I picked up an 100amp alt out of a 89 Taurus, and just need to know how to wire it up. It has a BAT terminal which I know goes to the Batt side of the solenoid, and a chassis ground, but what I want to know is what to connect the two wires in the T connector. it says FLD, and STA. This is where I'm confused. any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
Eddie, you're original alternator should also be marked but if not the field wire is the small terminal closest to the bearing, maybe a white or orange wire. The stator wire will be the other small insulated terminal oposite the battery terminal on the original alternator. The battery and field wires are the only ones required to make the alt work. The stator wire is the one that works the idiot light. Hope this helps.
You are going to need larger battery wire from the battery to the alternator. If you have an ammeter you better disconnect it before you connect the alternator.
Ray what does the field wire get connected to? Like what would I connect it to if I was wiring it up without the mav's wiring harness. Like in the case of wiring it from scratch? Thanks
Field wire goes straight to the voltage regulator. Some reg have the letters stamped on plastic retainer. If not, here's how they go: There are 4 plugs on the regulator, the first one (all by itself) will be the Bat plug (12 volts all the time) there will be a small space then the other three plugs will be close together. The second plug coming from the Bat plug will be the Stator plug (I believe if memory serves me and not necessary unless you have a light)...the next plug in the center of the small cluster is the Field plug (goes straight to the field on the alt) and the last plug is the Ignition plug...must have 12 volts when you turn the key on. This alt will not work if you don't ignite the regulator with this wire. Ign plug must go dead when key is turned off.
Dave, I don't think this is the alternator Eddie is using. His has a field plug so it is externally regulated. It will be different than the one in the pic. Edit...I could be wrong on this. I would think the 89 would have an internal reg. I need to find a pic of an 89 alternator. I've never worked on one of them before. Eddie, let me do a little research and I'll get back with you.
Eddie, it looks like 87-89 Taurus alternators ARE externally regulated so I should be correct on the above post. Check this eBay auction and see if this is the same alt you are using. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1987...hZ014QQitemZ7991802947QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V Here's another one. I think it's called a 3L alt...not a 3G. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Alte...013QQitemZ230155902186QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
yep thats the one Ray! I'll get started on it tonite, thanks. I burned up the last one because I didn't use a regulator. I have a new one that came with the car. I 'll try to cross reference it to make sure it's right.
Do I have to get a special voltage regulator since that alt is 100amp? or can I use the one that came with the car? It was brand new, but I cant x reference it to anything.
Same one will work fine. The regulator controls the voltage only. Doesn't matter what amp alt you have.
Sorry Ray, I was thinking something else. But wasn't there a problem with those 89 alternators? I had one in my Thunderbird, and it burnt the wiring harness to a crisp, I forget, but Ford had some upgrade to the wiring or the plugs on them.
