I have an over head hoist in my garage. I put two 7" channels sandwiching a 2x6 joist and bolted them in place. One side is supported by a concrete wall and the other end is supported by a laminated vertical beam 4x6. A trolley supports the 2 ton chain come-a-long. That way I can move the hoist from side to side. I still have to move the car in and out but that is fairly easy.

I've got a hoist in my shop. It's an electric 2000 lb on a trolley hung from the center beam which is twin 2 x 12's sandwiching a1/4" x 12" steel plate. I can pickup one end of my car :thumbs2:

You know a cherry picker rents for about 25.00 a day. just another option, maybe a little less work

Or you can buy one for about $150 and rent it out every now and then...have it paid for and use it whenever you want :D

I have one in my garage. No problems with it at all. If you have the extra change, get the motor tilting attachment too. Makes things easier.
