I was just wondering........is there any kits/modifications etc... available to control how an automatic transmission shifts? Like something that I could add on to my exisiting automatic transmission to be able to control when it shifts? Kinda like shiftronic in new cars? If so where could I get it? I am very interested in something like this.
You could put a manual valve body in it. Then you can shift all the time. But there is no way to have both(auto/manual)......I don't think.
I have a stock C4 with a shift kit, and I can shift if manually anytime, with my floor shifter (67 mustang shifter). Just put it in 1st, shift up from there. Earl
most C4s & C6s Ive ever driven are manual/automatic from the factory. Put it in low, its in low. Put it in 2, it's in 2nd no matter what speed. You can actually take off in 2nd gear if you want (done this at the drag strip a few times). But, if you put it in drive, it will shift 1-2-3 automatically. Every C4 & C6 I've ever had has done it like that.
Yeah that's what I was saying. I don't really care if it's shiftronic, where I can have either auto or manual. I just want to be able to control the shifting of my automatic transmission manually. So where did you get that shift kit from Earl Branham? And do you have pics of this installed?
oh and I would just shift my stock tranny like somebody else said......but I've always heard that shifting through the low gears a lot like that manually messes up an auto tranny. Don't know, but either way I'd like to have a shift kit or something. Just seems like it would give me better control.
Max; the shift kit was installed when the trans was built, 4yrs ago, by a guy that has since disappeared to parts unknown. I wish he was here, as I wanted him to build me an AOD. The kit is all in the valve body, and can't be seen without disassembly. It works great, and shifts hard. Take care, Earl
Wow! That's cheaper than I was thinking. And how does it work? (or how does yours work?) Do you always have to shift it manually or can you choose between shifting manually or automaticallY? I don't really care as long as I can shift manually, but just curious. Oh, and when you say stock C4 is that the auto tranny that mav's come with? I have the 200CID I6, would it have this tranny?
Max; yes, if you have an auto, it will be a C4. The shift kit firms up the shifts, and with some mods, can be made fully manual. With the standard kit, it will shift normally, just much firmer, and the trans will last longer, because it generates less heat from clutch slippage. It is a good investment, and a trans cooler is another mod you should have, especially if you get a higher stall converter. Earl
