So I changed out my spark plugs about 3 months ago. I took them out of my I6 250 the other day to check them and they are all good, except (counting from front to back) number 4 and 6. According to my chilton's it could be lead fouling and tells me to replace them. I wanted to know your guys opinion on what could be causing this and what i can do to fix it. Picture attached. Thanks
i had to replace my valve guide seals on my 250 because they fall apart when they get old. my spark plugs were very bad like yours. i had to change them every week. but definatly check into valve guide seals because i never have any problems since i replaced them when they fall apart the oil gets into the cylinders and ect.
That is not Lead fouling. It is modifier deposits. While it may look bad unless it bridges the gap there isn't much of a problem. The deposits are generally non-conductive. It comes from the additives in the gasoline you are using. Sometimes just switching brands gets rid of it.
It does but then gas is getting ugly these days. You might try the next hotter plug but as long as you use the same gas it won't change much.
I 100% agree with you on that. Gas is terrible. Octane ratings are a joke. And unless you own a brand new car that is made to run on this crap who knows how your car reacts to it. My 77 250 doesnt like anything but the 91 octane or it will diesel and ping like no other yet smog laws here are so strict I cant really mess with my timing much and I dont want to have to set everything and reset it when it gets smogged [/rant]
Bad gas huh, that sounds better than, or at least easier to remedy than bad valve guide seals. I will look at em anyways tho. Thanks for the help guys.
how often does the car need more oil? what exactly happened on mine is the rubber seals crumbled so when the car was shut off oil could drip in the cylinders then when youd go to start it the plugs get all gunked with the oil in the cylinders. after i redid mine it hasn't burnt any oil or gunked up any of the plugs. it costed me a hundred something to fix.
Well, it leaks oil, about a quart a month. It may be just a clogged PCV valve and a bad dust cover gasket... did you replace yours yourself or have a mechanic do it?
i went through exactly what your talking about... 1.) spark plugs being corroded unbelievably bad (to the point of no gap) 2.) oil is needed too often we had a mechanic do it while we watched. when we got down to the seals there was hardly anything left of the rubber seals. ever since we did it i've never had a gunked up plug and never have to add oil unless i'm changing the oil and oil filter.
