If an engine won't idle low enough to have the car in first gear and stay below 15 MPH it isn't a street car in my mind. If you drive a car with a race prepped engine on the street it will not last long and will need constant tuning. It used to be - if your fuel cost $5 a gallon it wasn't a street car but now....
WOW! This was an ole thread but since its been brought back, Here goes. Im not going to argue the street car part im just going to tell yall my latest plan. Since the "DRAG WEEK" is going to be in the south this year im going to join. I know i cant win overall but im going to enter daily driver and turn the car down. The fastest legal pass in this catagory is 10.80S. I dont have a rool bar and really dont want one (I know i need one) But i just dont want to "JUNK" up the interior with one. So yall wish me luck and maybe there will be a MAVERICK in DRAG WEEK and maybe the winners circle.
so my comet has plates and both stickers. gets inspected and passes w/o cheating. it hhas 12 1/2:1 comperession and has been tubbed and locked w/ a 6 pt cage. BUT i have a stereo and full lights and i am dumb enough to drive it on the street at 8.76 a gallon . is it a street car? it doesnt break 10's but its a pretty fun ride down the 1320 either way
What kind of fuel do you burn in an engine with 12.5:1 compression? And in my opinion, no, it is not a street car with that much compression!
street car When you drive it to the beer joint, grocery store, home depot, McDs and then to the cruise-in every friday and saturday nite after you get it back home from the strip. Its not about its track use , its about how its used when its not at the track.... JMO
A street car is a full drag car but how much are you willing to put up with to be able to drive it on the street? I was behind a guy going to LR at the power tour 2008, he had a full drag car--'66 Chevy II, big block, open headers, slicks (yes slicks on the street!), powerglide...we were driving down the freeway at 75 mph right next to each other with his pig block running about 3500 RPM and my Lightning running 2200. It was cool to see a drag car on the street but it makes me wonder how his hearing is? And how hot those aluminum floors got during a freeway drive? Heck I could put tags and insurance on mine and drive it...oh...wait, I'd have to put in a 40 gal cell for the methanol. But I wouldn't have to worry about overheating
MavMan, If you use Ethanol instead of Methanol you get tax credits. That should work! If you only need a 40 gallon fuel cell you must be close to those E-85 stations.
That was what I was going to say. If the car gets 2 gpm, who cares, I have a Honda Sabre to ride to work . . . :bananaman
performance cars Looking through these post I see alot of difference of opinion. I guess I when I think of a performance car, drag or otherwise. One of the key things to me is, does it start and go down the road. I mean, the key part of performance to me is being able to hop in, turn the key, and go down the road. Can't really be called performance if it doesn't perform, right? I guess this is something my high school mechanics teacher told me and it stuck in my head. Then again, maybe I am way off base. I know I wouldn't consider my Maverick a performance car yet, can't get take it down the road yet without my cell phone fully. charged! But I am getting there!
i drive 35 miles on interstate with 3.70 gears and run 5 runs throughout the night.... and car is tagged and titled and legal.... (well....except when i drive with slicks cause i'm lazy)
