OK both my 1972 and my 1973 Mavericks use a 4 prong/ear gas cap. If I put a 2 prong cap on either of them it will fit and if I do some tweaking it will even stay on buy doesn't really fit right.

What years had what kind of gas cap does anyone know for sure?? I will try to find some picture of the differences if I can't find any by doing a search, I will take a couple pictures when I get home tonight.

ok this is the 2 prong/ear type I am talking about and when I try to use one of these it will just keep turning around and around and fits very loosely unles I bend some stuff on the back side

That should be the correct cap for your 72 and 73. A 70 cap will not have the center vent on the backside. I believe it is 75-77 that uses the 4 prong cap. It is possible someone swapped out the filler neck.

4 prong is for unleaded gas cars

There is also a difference in the depth of the "ears" on the caps. I bought a deluxe cap off of eBay for mine, and the "ears" are further from the cap gasket. It fits my 74 neck, but won't tighten down. I'm going to try a thicker gasket and see if that helps....

Idunno but when I try to use the 2 prong on either the 72 or the 73 if I turn them a little too hard they just keep turning around and around. The 4 prong cap that CAME on the 72 works perfect. I insert it into the filler neck with the maverick logo upside down and turn it one half turn and it tightens and locks in place. The two prong caps never really get tight and never seem to hit a stop point, they will spin 360 degrees and never really tighten up.

Maybe I can show someone what I am talking about at the roundup

When you looking down the filler tube ... is it wide open? or setup so only a small nozzled gas pump can fit in it? May even have a flap ...

now that would make sense to me. because the 4 prong fits and locks in place on my 72 and 73. and the 2 prong does fits but doesn't tighten and wont stay on properly.

So the 4 prong is made to fit 1970 up until what 74??? and then 75 - 77 use the 2 prong??? Idunno. I guess I'll just wait until I talk to Craig and show him what the hell I am talkign about on Thursday or Saturday this coming week.....
