Does anyone know when 5 lugs became available on I6 engine Mavericks?

My '72 Sprint came with a 250/C4(only way that combo came) and has 5 lugs. It is not listed as an option on my Marti report. Were all of these larger I6's 5 lug or was it a random thing?

    Anybody know for sure?

70-72 cars with a 250 and A/C were supposed to have 5 lug. 5 lug didnt become standard equipment untill right after the start of the '73 model year

    Thanks, David.

My Sprint has basically no options, including a/c. Was it random or did every 250 got 5 lugs, whether they had a/c or not?

My Sprint has 5 lugs and no ac. All looks factory to me. Nothing on the build sheet indicating any options as far as suspension goes as far as I can recall. I will check when I get home. (in Idaho for until the weekend).

1973 was the first year I6 cars were 5 lug. My '72 200 non A/C car "looks" like it could have been factory 5 lug, because the rearend is old and dirty like the rest of the underside, but I personally converted it to 5 lug in 2006. Heck, I have a 9 inch rear with factory 4.11 gear that "looked" like it could have been factory in the 170 I6 '69.5 that it came out of, but obviously someone had swapped it in at some point. The newest of these cars is over 30 years old now, that is a long time for someone to have changed things...

I suppose someone could have changed it over but it seems if they had they would have changed it over to disk brakes. Who knows like Jamie said any mods could be over 30 years old. I guess its another Maverick mystery!

Yeah, it is probably like the parts put on some of the two wheel vehicles I collect from years ago.

They would run out of a certain run, and wouldn't remanufacture anymore for a while. They would just put on what they had in stock in the factory.

Perhaps it is a Sprint only occurence. Any other Sprint owners out there with the 250 I/6 option with 5 lugs from the factory?

My Sprint was owned most of it's life by an old man. It stayed within a 20 mile radius of where it was purchased in Ga. I doubt a complete suspension swap including the rear end was done. The suspension appears to be original. It has a #'s matching drivetrain and the rear end tag matches the door info. The driveshaft has the factory marking, etc.

I know that Jerry's Sprint is also very original.

I have numerous Sprint brochures, articles about Sprints, books that talk about Sprints, the Armchair Estimator for '72 that lists all the options including the Sprint and prices for them, and the '72 Merchandising Newsflash put out by Ford on Feb. 28, 1972 to all Ford salesman explaining the upcoming Sprint package. None of them specifically say anything about 4 lug or 5 lug wheels. The only thing mentioned is that the Sprint came with D70/14 WSW radials.

    Anybody else?

    Jim
