Ok...new question. Is the oil slinger necessary on my rebuilt 77 302? I have heard that many people throw them away and it didnt seem like a good idea to me. Also..has anyone ever found a pillar style mount for guages that fit the Mav's???
you can throw the slinger away if you want. I usually re-use them on street motors, helps keep some of the oil from getting to the front seal, thereby helping reduce the possibility of a leak. Those guage pods....haven't found any that fit the Mav's A-pillar. I just used some universal pods and cleverly hid the wiring behind the brackets and painted the screws. Can't see a thing, and if you're anything like me, it's hard to keep an eye on those guages anyway (I'm right handed and right-eye dominant), especially the boost guage. Good luck
slinger About five minutes after turning the last screw on my motor, I realized I had forgotten the oil slinger and kinda freaked out about it for a couple of minutes. Then I decided too leave it be and see if it was a problem. No leaks yet, so I guess I won the gamble.
One of the magazine had this to say about it, If you have an old timing cover that doesn't have a ledge over the seal then you want the slinger. If you have the ledge then you don't need the slinger. I personally have not put it on the three engines I have (truck, mustang and maverick) and have no leaks (knock on wood)
I will have to check which one I have. The motor is a 77, off hand, should it have a slinger or not. It doesnt sound like it will hurt either way. Thanks guys
Its a little tin washer type thingy that slips over the crank shaft between the timing gear and the timing chain cover. It slings oil around to help lube things. Did that make sense?
no ! i think it is a concave washer.it is used to keep the oil off the front seal. it slings the oil that is fed up the crank shaft to the seal back into the block. if it has one leave it on. it can only help. j.m.o....frank...:bananaman :bananaman
I had a girl friend once that was an oil slinger. She was kinda fun for awhile. No, wait, different kind of oil. Never mind.
So that is what that thing is. I have takend apart lots of motors at work and I always used that as a washer to keep the head bolts from pulling through the chain that I use to pick them up when I go to throw out the bad blocks.
