I found guy selling a rear end out of a 77 versailles, but he said it is not a 9 inch. the way he described it is its got a bolt on cover on the back and can not pull the pumpkin out like a 9 inch. it has 3.08 gears, disc brakes. does any one know what rear end this is? if its not a 9" can a guy swap the disc brake set up over to a 9"? I thought maybe it was an 8" out af a granada but the pumpkin is wrong for that also.

    Its junk. :yup:

I have been told that these are a 7.5 or an 8.8 and that they are complete junk compared to the stock 8".

From my understanding the 8.8 rear ends from these cars are a lot different than the newer 8.8's and none of the internals will interchange. The disk would be good to have if they were like the explorer setups but he is asking if it will swap over to a 9" which I think has a bigger flange than the 8".

I was always under the assumption that all Versailles had 9 inch disc rears.

Could the truth of the matter be that all Versalles had rear disc brakes but could be on either a 9 or an 8.8 rear?

I have the 9" already just wondering if the brakes will swap over, he wants $100 for the complete rear end

I believe the guy is mistaken about what it came out of.
Versillies had 9" rears... Also, they didn't have a 3.08 ratio available.
IIRC, there were 2 ratios in those... one around 2.50 and the other roughly 2.75.
Both junk gears, but I wouldn't refer to the rears as junk.

Disc brakes were an option on Granada/Monarchs, and they also came with the 8.7" integral rear occasionally. I don't know if the 8.7" AND discs happenend together, but I suppose they could have. So he may have a disc brake rear from a Merc, and is thinking it is from the Lincoln.

    Edit:
If you just want a driver rear with disc brakes, AND this rear did come from a Granada/Monarch, then it should bolt into a Mav/Com just fine. There is probably no aftermarket support for beefing up that rear, unless 8.8" stuff fits it. And it just might... But for a driver, why not??? If you wan't better gears and a strong rear, wait for a 9".
    My .02... your's may vary.

Maybe some one robbed the 9" and put a junk rear up under it to send it on?(seen that done a time or two)

The 8.8 has a rear cover and no third member (pumpkin). Everything inside comes out through the back. The 7.5 is what was used on the early Falcons - 60 -64 with 6 cylinder engines.
On the flip side if the brakes are five lug, they should go on your axle... I think.

oh and this is taken from his website

"Photo 8 - Sorry no picture but from 69 to 78 Ford made the WER axle (the ID tag shows this rear as an 8.7-inch) used in the big cars and some Granada's which looks like the 8.8". It had a 10 bolt cover, used C-clips to hold the axles (like the 8.8") but had adjusting nuts for the carrier bearings (like the 9") instead of shims which are used in the 8.8". "

The 7.5 was used in all sorts of vehicles besides just the Falcon, including Mustangs, Rangers, Aerostars, and 1970 Mavericks. I'm sure you probably know this.
