Just wanted to add my .02. took stock motor out my 77 mav put different oil-pan on it to fit into a fox-platform mustang, home ported the exhaust to match gasket and get rid of "lump", put stock HO cam from 80's in it 195 @ .050 .416 lift(351W firing order) Stock HO intake, edelbrock 600 carb, headers, duals with home-made x-pipe, duraspark ignition, C-4 with Transgo stage one shift kit and 2000 RPM stall, stock 7.5" rear with 3.08 gears with posi. Ran 15.30 @ 92 at 2000' above sea level. Ran all last season with no parts breakage. gets 20-21 MPG on highway. Moral: you don't need to go overboard on buying parts to get good performance. Buy edelbrock performer parts, team with headers and you'll be happy with it. Also put Z-gate from B&M in my mav super easy mod. I went with the Transgo shift kit 'cause used B&M in past and it shifted HARD all the time.

    Budget?

My budget for this project, like the speed limit on the highway, is "advisory". And as long as my wife doesn't look at the speedometer or the parts receipts, I'll be ok! I'll let you know in a year what the happy total is, and where I spent too much money. I'll probably blow the cost through the roof when I get it painted 'cause I want it to look nice as well as go fast!

    Thanks for your thoughts!

    Pop To top

I am looking at doing a complete rebuild on my 74 302. I have a few lines on some early heads to up the performance a bit. Looking for a smokin street rod no trips to the strip at all. I just have a question about pulling the motor.

Should I lift it out the top or lower it through the bottom? If that even works.

Hooker Super Comps, good fit except for the AOD, which they were not designed around.
    Still using column shifter.

New2Maverick, engine comes out the top. It won't fit through the bottom... heads are too wide.

Thanks. I do a lot of import four bangers and most of the time they are core motors so it is eaiser to let them drop on the ground.

OK here is what im thinking.

71 302, 6901's with duals and dynomax, edel. 600 manual choke, performer rpm, and comp high energy 268, 3.00 gears

Any ideas as to how nice this will run together?

sounds like a solid combo. The regular Performer might match the cam a bit better, but you won't lose much by going with the Performer RPM. The RPM has a bit of headroom if you ever decide to spin it a little higher.

New2Maverick, when I was 13 I got an Escort EXP, sporty edition of the Ford Escort. We pulled the engine in pieces, so it all came out the top.
Later, we built a shop, chain horse and all, and tried to drop the engine in from the top like we did all the others... we got it several fingernails later.

to make a long story short, parts house got the crank and bearings the wrong size, no oil pressure. We wrapped a chain around the front of the car, dropped the engine on a jack and lifted the damn car off the ground and rolled the engine and tranny out. It was not fun doing it the wrong way the first time.

It was funny to see the EXP 4 feet off the ground, front end hanging from a chainhorse, the rear sitting atop a helluva set of sawhorses...

Do you know of a better cam that would match it nicer? without having to worry about any valve clearance? Thanks a bunch
