Hey guys, I am upgrading the '70 to power disk brakes. Everything went on great until I got to the Power booster!! The booster has a five bolt pattern just like the Mustangs do, and the maverick has a four bolt pattern. I can drill another hole that is not all of my issue. The '70's four bolts are actually self sinking Studs that holds the brake petal and also looks like it holds up the steering column. So I really don't want to compromise that brace. I there any way around this issue? HELP!!! It is killing me not to be able to drive my car yet!!! Thanks guys, Shelby PS I will have pictures of what I am talking about hopefully tonight!!
Do you have the bracket that goes in between the pedal bracket and the firewall? I may be wrong but you need this for power brakes using the maverick setup.
Yes I have this!!! It is one of my problems.... I can't get a nut in there to tighten these bolts down coming from the Booster because the bracket is in the way. The booster that I have does not take self taping studs. It has bolts already built into the booster it's self.
Hi Shelby, I am glad the projects on the Mav are already going on! Anyway, what exact booster do you have? Unless it is going to be a custom job, you need the Maverick power brake booster and the angled spacer that goe between it and the firewall. For the 4 bolts that go through the firewall with the Maverick booster you have to enlarge/oblong some of the holes in order for it to fit - they booster bolts are spread a little wider than the manual master cylinder's. Make sure you have the Mav specific brake booster and it's angled bracket along with the Maverick power brake shock tower brace. Let us know more when you can. Best of luck! -Corbin
That's my issue right there!!!! I have a power booster for a '70 Mustang not for a Maverick. We were doing a story on crossing the conversion lines trying to get Mustang/falcon/torino so on and so forth to work on my maverick. Trying to show a cheaper alternititive to tracking down a power booster and Granada brakes. But it sounds like I am going to have to do that anyways!!! Do anyone know were I can find a booster for a Maverick by chance? I would like this project to go as planned and find a way to modify my car to fit the booster, but it just does not seem logical to me. I was hoping one of you crazy guys have done this and found a way around my problem!!
BTW I have offically named my car RHSC for Red Headed Step Child. She is giving me fits!!! Of course it is not just her, it also has to do with where I have her. An over protective friend will not let me take her home until he is comfortable that she is "safe" for me to drive. She will most likely have air bags installed if he has his way. LOL Help me get my car out of Daddy wanna be's garage!!!
I don't know. Post an ad in the Parts wanted for the Maverick power brake booster, and shock tower brace. By the way, you need to also change the brake pedal bracketry under the dash to a power brake one - unfortunatly the manual brake one is different. You will have to drop part of the steering column to get the bracket out. Good luck. Make sure you get all those parts. -Corbin P.S. Also use the search feature on the board to find more good info on the brake booster swap. There are some other good tech articles out there like the one on www.maverickgrabber.com
As Corbin stated, you can only run an automatic with the Maverick booster set up. Its also huge, takes up way too much room, and you need the special shock tower brace to go with the booster. If you want a cheap alternative, try a Geo booster. Check out this web sight. They put one in a Falcon which has even less room than we do. : http://www.stuart.iit.edu/students/2112/restoration/powerbrakes.htm
Forget the big bulky booster. It just robs vaccuum from the intake manifold anyway. Also gives you a cleaner engine compartment. As long as you have the disc, it should stop you O.K. I like the Red Headed Step Child phrase. I told you we were nothing but a bunch of misfits.
Thanks guys, I think I will just stick with the Master cylinder right now and maybe look into doing the Geo upgrade. It kind of looks like fun!!! Don't shoot me for putting ricer parts on my Ford... LOL I knew if I came in here with an issue you guys would have the answer!! I love this group (by group I mean Maverick owners) you guys are not afraid to modify and you are always willing to help!!! That is awesome. :bananaman Gotta give ya a :bananaman LOL Later, Shelby
