i have dreamed of doing something like that. personaly i would want a late 40s early 50s truck thats electric. they make fiber glass bodies for those era trucks. i was thinking of makeing a tube chassi that has the eletric drivetrain and use the glass body. it should be light, efficent, and just cool. i have not looked into it in depth because the finances are not there to do it right now. i say go for it. it would make a great tech artical. youll get bet mpg than a 2.3 mav, ;)

The batteries to power the car would probably weigh more than the car.

    Good link.

    The batteries weigh 1700#
The motor another 200#, or thereabouts.
    2000# conversion.

You would lose about 1000# on engine and other misc stuff.
So net gain, in his case 1000#.
He could have lost another 100#+ by doing away with the tranny.
Electric motors are very stable over a wide range, so they don't need gear changes like an engine, which makes 'peaky' power.

I asked him why he didn't do away with his tranny. I am sure he has studied this more than I... Which I haven't. ;)

I just know that tid-bit about electric motors vs engines on the subject of trannys and gearing. I also noticed that the site he bought his conversion kit/motor from, also make thier motors with a yoke from the rear, to hook directly to your driveshaft.
That way you lose more weight, and gain battery space because the motor is now mounted in place of the tranny, instead of taking up engine bay space.

A Maverick is a smaller car, so it might make the conversion even better.
Very interesting. I am going to follow this one.
    Thanks
    Dave

What kind of performance do you want from this electric car?
I have a lot of experience in electronic drive controls from 12 to 48 volts dc and three phase electric drive systems for battery operated vehicles.
    Maybe we can collaborate.......

I read somewhere that electric motors make full torque as soon as you turn them on.

No way a 2.3l would get way better MPG than an electric motor:yup:

the elec motor will have unlimited miles per gallon. what you need to do is to make a grabber hood out of solar panels.

    Yeah, it's something like that....
    They don't need a tranny...
The blog says he is going to drive in 2nd gear.
He is removing the clutch. The tranny will shift when sitting still, but otherwise will be dicey. I guess he just wants the option of changing gears from time to time to suit driving conditions. ???

    we are both right.....

An electric motor does not use gas. There for no MPG can be measured but I concede it would also get unlimited MPG as a result:D

    No wrong answer:drive:

    Tongue in cheek!!!

that would probably work. Highway speed vs. city driving speeds.

With the current technology in solar panels, you would need a solar panel as large as a semi trailer to make much difference. Someday, maybe, but not just yet....

I've picked up a book on electric vehicle conversion and will do my homework before taking on such a project. that and I can't afford anything at the moment...

I also really want to see how the electric duster performs after its done... learn from his mistakes.
