I'm tring to put a 4.6 liter single overhead cam out of an early 1991 crown victoria lx into my 1976 maverick. Need help with the wireing harness .I'm totally lost on what I take off my donor car for wires. I got the whole crown vic(wrecked but runs). thanx for any help....
I'm not too familiar with the 4.6's harness and electrical system, but there was a guy at the local u-pull-it salvage last week that was pulling a 5.4 from a truck. all they did was remove a few bolts for the mounts, disconnect the harness and drape it over the top of the engine, and 'the hook' pulled it out. I watched the entire operation....took about an hour. The hood was already raped of the truck and I'm sure there were other parts gone that would have been in the way as well. Didn't look too hard, though. I would suggest getting a wire diagram so if you have problems getting it all hooked up during the swap, you'll have something to go by.
The 4.6 started in the crown vic, towncar, marquis and thunder birds in 91 and then in 96 they went into the mustang
I'd like to see some pics of this too... Runs in my mind that the 4.6 is way too wide to fit between the shock towers. Are you planning on a Mustang II front suspension and deleting said towers? And if you're going to do all that, I still say the V10 would be an awesome swap!!!! (one day I'm gonna do it!).
There is no way a 4.6 is going in a Mav. without some serious cutting I have one in my 97 F-150 and that thing is wide!!
They are wider than a 460! On my '93 Vic there is a single bulkhead connector, plus the Alt wires. That'll make it pretty easy to tell what you need.
4.6 started in the crown vic, towncar, marquis and thunder birds in 91 When I bought my '93 T-Bird new I only had a choice of a 3.8 or 5.0, no mod motor.
I believe it was the lincoln town car and crown vicky in 1991 that offered the new 4.6 sohc. Putting in a non modified 4.6 is a lot of work for a driver when a 5.0 will give you better performance with much less weight. I hope you are planning for a lot of mods to the engine bay and suspension. Those engines are huge especially when you get them near the engine bay and see the differences size in all dimensions. Good luck if you proceed and plenty of pics. What tranny are you planning on using?
I wouldn't say the 5.0L is much lighter, do you have any weight numbers? I bet they are pretty close. The T-bird didn't get the 4.6L until around 1995 I think.
4.6 sohc I plan on putting a stang II front on it. I'm going to Take the disc's off the 76' and put them on my 72's front end. I think I can make this 4.6 liter work though (something to do). I Still will probably need some assistance though. thanx guys
the shock towers will have to be removes and the trans crossmember will have to be modified as well, much wiser to find a good 5.0
