I'm in a similar situation. What would cause the timing mark on the crank pulley to be completely on the underside away from the bracket marker when checking 1st cylinder? 250 six, Runs rough, just rebuilt carb and has been running better than it is now, can't adjust timing until I solve this, maybe it's obvious but never seen so far from the marks. all ignition parts are less than a month old, has ran rich though so I will replace plugs too. Any suggestions?

Balancer has spun on the rubber... mine has done that and i'm thinking it's the cause if it having a vibration.
Look and see if you can see the rubber poking out, usualy on the rear or back side. Belt(s) will also be off line.

Ignition? Check for shorted plug wires to the block or manifolds.

New fuel pump, and a couple broken cable terminals replaced now.

Started to pull out in the road and had no power. Didn't want to rev up. Yanked it off the road and tried to turn it off, and no go! Wouldnt turn off! Pulled away and it acted fine all the way home, and shut off once I got home.

    Any clue?

Sounds like a short to the coil. I would guess the ignition switch on top of the steering column down at the base may be the cause.

The starter solenoid can stick on and make it run with the key off too. You usually hear it but not always. The first pothole you hit will sometimes release the solenoid and it all works fine until the next time it sticks. If that is what happened then it is time to replace the solenoid - before it sticks again and causes starter problems or a fire.

just give the solenoid a tap with something hard, should unstick solenoid, happens to me all the time, even with a new one. what causes that?

The contacts are welding together. It happens when battery voltages are low when starting.
