Hi ya all!!! I was messing around with the comet yesterday to get rid of some rust, so I jacked up the right side and while doing that I just grabbed the right front wheel and it felt loose... I was pulling it towards me and back, and it really goes chunk chunk, inspected the brake drum and wheel bearing but all that was ok, it was behind all that... Is this as it should or do I need to change something and in that case what..? Thank you!!! Robert.
That clunk is the play in your upper ball joint. It really isn't important - it just holds your car of the ground.
Thank you so much Paul, I was thinking big expenses and no cigarettes or food for next month.. :Handshake Robert.
I am glad you took it in the joking light it was meant.... The early Mustangs had slop in the ball joints from the factory but I don't really think it is something that you should put off too long. I have mine scheduled for complete front end rebuild in February. It has had loose joints and caster bar bushings for a couple of years. It sounds like yours has been bad for a while too. Do you get clunking when you turn or stop?
No not really when I turn or stop, but It´s kind of hard to say because I don´t really know how it´s supposed to feel when it´s in good shape!!!! What parts shall I start of with...? Robert.
my ball joints in the front were horrible. there was hardly anything left of em' when we took it to the mechanic he said, until thats fixed its very dangerous to drive the car....
Shoot'em full of grease, then check'em again....they may just be dry. And then again, if they are worn out, grease won't make any difference, just make them easier to pop apart!
Upper and lower control arms is where I started. California Mustangs has a kit for a 70-73 that fits perfect. You can replace the bushings but you need lots of patience and a big press. I have the press but I can't get under the car to do the work. My parts will be installed in February at the local Tech school. They only charge 35% of the parts for labor. http://www.cal-mustang.com/
