1974 Maverick anyone know whre I can buy a rebuil kit for my Manual steering gear box, or who know if the Classic Mustang Steering Box of Flaming River work in my car? http://www.flamingriver.com/index.c...tegory_id=105/home_id=80/mode=prod/prd256.htm
dont know anything about the Flaming River boxes but the Maverick steering box will interchange with 68+ Mustangs, Granada's, Monarch's, Fairlane's, etc.
Nope The Maverick, Granada and Fairlane steering boxes are bigger than the early Mustang boxes. Mounting apttern is different and all the major internal parts will not interchange. However, the rebuild kit for the 1968-1970 Mustang steering box will work on the Maverick box, with the exception of the top plate gasket. http://www.stangerssite.com/GBparts.html
How do you know this? Have you used this kit? I'd like to put this information in the newsletter but I want to know it is accurate first. Thanks
this is the scary part for me... "A full eight pages of pictures and text, explaining removal, teardown, cleaning, inspection, reassembly and adjustment." that and it doesn't come with the...worm gear or balls... ......
Steering Box Rebuild Mavaholic - I am familiar with many of the Ford steering boxes because I rebuild them for a living, along with pumps, control valves and power cylinders. The Ford "intermediate" cars used a heavier steering box than the Falcon and Mustang. It is physically larger and, other than the bearings, seals and a few bolts and washers, everything inside the box is bigger. Of course, I am talking about the non-integral style steering boxes - the ones that do not have any hydraulic lines run to them. Although there are variations on the rack blocks and sector shafts over the years, there is not much difference between a 1966 and later Falcon box, or a Fairlane/Torino, Maverick or Granada. 71gold - What is scary about the rebuild kit not coming with the worm gear and balls? Unless there is rust or physical damage inside, these parts are re-used during a rebuild. This wouldn't be part of a normal rebuild. The input shaft/worm gear isn't available new anyway, so you would have to find a good used one. revatoons - The Flaming River boxes are strictly Mustang and Falcon. They are made in Argentina. I don't believe the plant that makes them has produced any parts for the larger steering boxes, so I doubt a new box will ever be available for the Maverick.
Stanger53 thanks for your input...:Handshake could you tell us about the common wear problems with our steering boxes and a cost for your rebuilds? or maybe we could buy the rebuild kits from you. 8 pages of instructions to change 2 bearings and seals seems a little too indepth for me. ...Frank...:Handshake
71gold - I think you can find information about anything you want to know on my website, including rebuild kits. www.stangerssite.com It takes 8 pages because shop manuals and magazine articles leave out a lot of stuff and don't take into consideration that these boxes are 30+ years old. Also, some of the pages are illustrations. Mavaholic - All of the Mavericks used the same style box, the only difference being the number of grooves on the worm and rack for the different ratios, so the rebuild parts will work in all of them.
awesome site, stanger53. Will be looking at a kit for my winter break rebuilding extravaganza. lots of slack in my steering but still less than my girlfriend's 6 year old honda Geaux Mavericks! ..and Comets!
after checking that site i want to rebuild my box just to do it. i dont need to but i have a spare and just might dive into it. great site with great info.
So, is there really a difference between a box from a car with Power Steering, and one without? Plus I just checked out your site, I should be able to help you find some of those magazines on your wanted list, I just pulled 3 huge boxes out of storage form the 80's.
There is a difference in the steering ratio only between the power and manual steering boxes on our Mavericks and Comets. Faster steering (fewer turns lock to lock) on the power steering units.
I'm waking up this zombie thread.. Way too much play in my steering and there is signs of excessive wear on its internal parts. I'm sending in my steering box to stanger53.. impressive website! My entire front end is disassembled, and going with moog parts.
I sent him my steering box...I talked to him before I sent it. Now he won't return emails or phone calls. He would have received it Fed Ex 6 days ago. I'm getting worried.
