Don, I wonder if your machinist could add weight to the piston by drilling/tapping a hole in the pin boss, then Loctite in a steel screw.
It's made of that new Heliumantinum material... Can you just take that amount of weight out of the other assemblies? Given the same materials that should be possible. Of course then everything else will have to change also...
Too much weight to take out. 29 grams. He's going to machine another piece and press it into the pin.
29 grams? Cripes. Makes me wonder if it's even the right piston. 29 grams of aluminum is a chunk especially when we're talking pistons. I once had a set of TRW's in a 460 (yeah...990 grams EACH without pins). 7 were 990 one was 978. So I had to remove about 12g from 7 pistons. That is very common with TRW's. What a joke that was! At least on a heavy 460 piston, there is some room to remove metal but on an already fairly light 302 piston, that would be a little more challenging.
If you look at this piston, it looks exactly the same. The wrist pins on all of them are exactly 113 grams, like they're supposed to be. Only thing we could think of is maybe the silicone content is different. He thinks the piston is okay to use. I was planning on using a Doug Herbert cam. Called them this afternoon. That cam has been discontinued. Called a friend at Don's Hot Rod shop in Tucson. They ordered me a solid lifter Isky cam.
29 grams is only an ounce..... you ought to be able to take that off the underside of the top without a problem..... yeah, right.
got them back today. He did an awesome job of adding a piece that is pressed inside the pin. I didn't think the price for doing it was bad either, $60.
