I have a 1974 Maverick with Three speed manual, 200ci I6. When I start off and move through the gears, I am hearing a ringing sound, like a ringing bell. Kinda sounds like it coming from transmission, but I don't know. Any ideas?

Is there any associated clunking? Is it a momentary clang when applying power and letting the clutch out or a constant ringing? Check the u-joints.

One possibility is the starter motor. There is a c-clip on the end of the armature shaft that sometimes can come off and allow the starter drive to slide back and forth making contact with the flywheel with the engine running. It would be very easy to take a starter off a 6-cyl car to check this.

Yep, what Ray said...starter, IMO. Maybe not fully disengaging or coming into slight contact with the flywheel.:)
