Everytime I put gas in my Mav gas spills out the filler neck. Has anyone else had this happen before, how could it be fixed. I am getting my car painted soon and don't want to mess the new paint up. The car is a 69.5 car if that matters.

that happended to me before to but its because the gas tank was full. My tank isnt the orginal so the gauge is off so its hard to tell when it needs gas.

My Maverick does that too. When I fill the tank I make sure to tell whoever is pumping in the fuel to stop putting in more fuel as soon as the pump clicks off. I also carry a roll of paper towels in the trunk just in case.

It's because of the filler neck. I think after '74 they changed them, because when gas had lead in it the nozzle was bigger. I have this problem too, so I'm on the lookout for a later model filler neck.

every time i put gas in my mav, it dosnt mater if im filling it up or just the usual 5 bucks it spills out. there is one gas station that has older pumps with the retro-fitted fume tubes in san francisco, the filler is almost twice the legnth of average, this is the only gas station i can fill up at in under 15 minutes.... all the other places i gotta pump as slowly as possible so the gas gets in the tank.

I changed the filler tube in my '73 to a newer style (with the flap) and haven't had a problem since. You might think about converting it.

I was thinking of trying that but didn't know if it would actually fix my problem or not. Now that I know it worked for you I will see if I can find a newer filler neck. Thanks

New gas pumps are a lot faster than the ones that were around in the 70s, and that contributes to the problem.

Yeah, you just have to pump painfully slower.

Pump slowly and SAVE YOUR MONEY...?

Like the guy in the ING commercials says...

Mine is a 72 with the big tube as well... and since I'm never in a hurry to put all my spare cash into a full tank, I always pump slowly.

Maybe they're different in Canada, but with the angle of the tank tube our pumps always seem to 'kick out' if I try to fill at full speed. It works at 3/4 and I learned to STOP as soon as it kicks out because that extra little shot always sprays out the back.

Also Also... after a review of the gas-gouging we all got last summer (the fake oil shortage that never existed) local TV media reported that more than 1/2 of the ga$ pump$ are not calibrated for daily/seasonal temperature change... so the slower you pump the more accurate the reading$ are. And someone said to fill up late night since even a minor temp. change can change the reading at the pump, although I dunno if huge underground tanks will heat up or cool down much in a day.

Slow down ....and answer all the questions about "what kind/year of car is that", and listen to how they/their cousin used to have one with a BOSS 302 in it. etc.

heh heh... honest to god... that happens EVERY SINGLE TIME. I love it.

If I pop the hood to check the fluids, someone inevitably comes over to look over my shoulder and ask questions.
