Your car is a 72, someone installed a 73 front bumper on it, anything can happen in 37 years.

Maybe the front clip of your car has been changed? Do your fender have the notch in them? (small bumpered cars have different fenders, than 73 & on) Or someone welded them up?
How long have you owned this car for? Interesting none the less, can you post some pictures?

Your car was built late in the '72 model production run. It could have been a early pre producton unit used of training reasons. They ususally do not leave the plant but anythings possible. The pre producton cars are built so new assembly operations can be learned in each zone so when the new models begin mass production everyone has an idea what to do! Pre procuction unit are inspected and approved in each zone. Issues are addressed and resolved in pre delivery or repair zones. I don't think they were ment to be delivered to the public. Paper work must be met for the governmemt comply stickers. Then they can be shiped. Mabe if your car was just a '73 bumper run for new model excersize without a '73 compliance for the engine and drive train then they could let it go as a '72. Then you have a special and rare car! You car could have also ben fitted for the '73 bumper in an off line engineering area. They could have used that completed car, removed the '72 bumper and retrofited the '73 bumpers to "prove out" a new design. Then shiped to car to dealer the way it was.

had the car about 10 years it has the cut outs on the fenders.I have a kodak easy share c533 but i have no idea how to post the pictures. When i got the car i thought that someone had wrecked it and just replaced the bumper with whatever they could find. Then a couple of weeks ago i started looking to see what i would need to but a fiberglass bumper on until i could afford a chrome one thats when i noticed it had no holes for the small bumper brackets

I think you all might be missing the obvious. It could have had a VIN swap and this would also explain it.

    Waiting to see pictures.

I seriously doubt the vin has been changed as long as the dash tag and door plate match. Those door data stickers are impossible to remove. Since you have notched fenders I'd say the bumper has been swapped. When you say there are no holes, do you have the 73 bumper and brackets removed and are looking at the frame rails?

Does the car still have the door jamb data sticker??? if not i would be kinda suspect...
But it sounds like someone did a bumper switcharoo on it at some point. The small bumpers fold up pretty easily when whacked.

I am curious if the valance is the 73-only with the larger opening, or the earlier one ...

If the fenders are notched, then I would say it came with the 72 bumper, and someone swapped the 73 bumper to it. How many holes are in the bumper brackets? 73's used different fenders, and a different front valance. Pictures would help. I highly doubt that's the way your car came from the factory.

The 70-72 only had 2 holes in the frame rails. Should look like this:
