What engine should I stick in this thing? Should I go with a 289 or a 302? Also, since it has a manual tranny, will a 289 bolt right up to that transmission assuming the tranny is stock?

depending on the year 289, the real old ones have a different bellhousing pattern. any "302" will fit. later model 302/5.0 the block is different where the older clutch pivot goes. but i think they make adapters. i would go with a newer 5.0 prefferablly from a sn95 stang, cougar or t-bird... maybe an explorer for the gt40 heads(not the gt40p's )
not sure if headers clear the spark plug due to the revised angle on the p's

Where exactly is this junkyard or do you have a name or number for it that I can try and get directions, I would not mind going myself.

P.S. Hope that the car works out for you and its not too rusty

Would you recommend I purchase a crate motor, or would it be best just to find a late model 302/5.0 and have it rebuilt? What would be the most cost effective? I have found plenty of 95 Mustang 5.0 engines that can be had locally for around $500. I'm sure I could find one for even less....

Mine has rust issues but its not the subject of this thread. I'm in the middle of the cowl vent repair and have quarter panels to cut down and install. :(

Here's the contact info I got for the junk yard. " north of Oxford off
hwy 96 if interested email junkcrazywms@gmail.com" Enjoy!! He has a LOT of old cars there. Watch where you walk -- you'll be joined by a couple of friendly horses.

I say crate engine, my 302 I have already got 1300. in and still need other parts by the time you get done rebuilding a 302 you will have put about the same amount in or maybe more and that is not cost of engine. It just depends on what you like better if you are looking to rebuild yourself for the experience or have someone else do it. But I say crate if you got the money it is easier.

Do you really think so? Every crate engine I see out there is between 5-6K for a complete engine.

I want to do it right, so I'll probably go that route. Plus I have zero experience building engines, so its probably something I wouldn't want to tackle.

JSarnold and Apexstang, we need to have one of Frank's meet-n-eat get togethers.
A 'large time' will be had by all!

    I'm in Apex.

Sounds good. I'd like to meet any Triangle Maverick owners. :tiphat: Mine won't be on the road for a year or so so no car to show unless you want to come to my garage sometime. Just let me know when and where.
