Well... I seem to have a choice between two (three cars if you include the 86 Capri RS I'm lookin at...)

The Maverick is $2300 and the Comet is $4200. They both have elements I want.

The Comet: V8, ridiculously low mileage (55,000), good over-all shape (will actually see it this weekend if still available). Drawback: the fact it so close to perfect for a 36 year old car that really hasn't been touched I'd hate to do anything to it, cherry bomb muffler, stupid looking spoiler.

The Maverick: cool paint, Grabber hood & fin, low price. Drawback: 6 cyl, four lug, car.

I'm thinking that with the right engine, that Comet could be the ultimate sleeper.

That Maverick would be cool, but, it'll take lots of work and $$ to give it what that Comet already has.

    Opinions...?

I think they're both too much. But given the choice,Comet if you got the cash. That Mavs kinda goofy looking to me.Get rid of that spoiler on the Comet, and it's a good, clean looking car.

I would buy the comet...but you need to determine which one will cost you less to get it where you want.As stated the comet is allready a 5 lug V-8 car soo...some of the hard parts are allready there...still needs disc brakes if it doesnt allready have em.Which car is in better mechanicle and cosmetic condition....which one has less rust... just some of the things to ponder...good luck...buy the comet...

Start with the better car, even if it costs more to buy, it'll save you more in the long run. Mavericks/Comet seem to be worth more when they are modified.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the Comet. That Grabber hood just looks cool, though.

Both are a lot higher than what I paid for my 74 Maverick 10 years ago, $500 for that. I put a couple thousand in it and was not able to get it the way I wanted before I had to let it go when I moved down here.

Really, for me, the 302 is mandatory. Never been a fan of the 6 cyl.

Hehe... wife thinks the Comet is ugly. Hey, she doesn't have to drive it :D!!!

i would buy the comet all the hard stuff already done like the v8 and five lug. i know putting a v8 into mine wasn't the funnest experience but i sure learned alot. hey and with the extra money you saved you could buy a repoduction gt hood scoop and throw it on top of that hood.

id go with the most desireable hardwares such as v8 motor, 5 lug opts. its great to have the looks as well.... sometimes just gotta go with the performance than looking good.

I'd get the comet and ditch the spoiler and maybe put a grabber spoiler on it change rims. and your set. that way you don't have to go through the headache of dropping a v8 in it and changing the suspension all over.

That Comet is begging for a small front bumper. $4200 is steep though IMO. I'd be thinking more like 3200 - 3500.

Capri's are awesome too! I have a rust free '80 RS I picked up for $250 a couple years ago with a blown up 4 cyl in it, it'll be a future project. Just don't have the time to do anything with it right now.

That's about the price range I was thinking as well. Not sure if he'll come off that far yet, only been for sale for a few weeks. He might though, he's looking for cash the work on a few other projects.

The Capri RS is an awesome car. Not sure if that can be said about the car in question, yet. Should be able see and test drive it this weekend. A little concerned about it, seller says he has no idea of how old the tranny is, but, the engine has less than 40k (just dropped it in last weekend) and is stock. It has the price advantage right now @ $2k, which makes me wonder if it's a basket case.
