I was driving the Merc 1971 Comet and noticed a slight grinding noise. I pulled over and noticed one of my nuts was gone. Another nut was also loose. I tightened the loose nut and investigated. my ball joints are shot and the lower balljoint control arms also need replacing. Would this be the cause of the grind? The inner part of the tires were not hot. it doesn't seem that the tire is rubbing. What else can it be?
Somthing may have come loose in the brake drum and is floating around making all kinds of havoc...bad wheel bearings...shoes grinding on drum due to a lack of friction material...rusty drum grinding on backing plate...Better check the rest of your lug nuts and be sure they are not loose too...
oh....I'm not a drum brake expert. What exactly am I looking for? I am assuming it's dangerous to drive like that as well. My tires have these deep sockets do I need some special tool to reach the lugnuts? I have chilton's repair manual and don't see much as far as a diagram of the drums. Anyone have a detailed drawing or information on how to diagnose drums? Thanks for the help!!
