Mine had it. I removed it. And in the process, got rid of all my power steering leaks.

    I converted to manual steering.

Can't speak so far as the Mavericks but the F100's had 2 different coolers on them. One was the cooler with fins that bolted on top of the steering box or up near the pump. The other cooler was just a longer return line that weaved back and forth several times and bolted to the side of the frame horn. Neither looked much like a cooler. My daughter's 96 Mustang only has a longer line that goes across under the radiator support and back once.
I would think you could make a cooler very easily is my point.

I have had a lot of old fords that had the cooler on them. I think that it helped to keep the Ford ps wine down a bit. I have also had a couple that just zig zagged the steel part of the line a few times to help in cooling. The fin thing though, I always thought that was kind of funny looking lol. Its not real big, but I guess they thought that it was important in some applications.

Well I found my leak. Fortunately it was on the return line, so I was able to fix it. The other hoses look good, but I'll have to wait until I can clean them up to be sure, since everything down there is hosed...

Return line was clocked up at an odd angle, and had apparently been contacting the exhaust manifold for a while. It had worn a small hole. I had somebody turn the wheel while I was under there, and I could see it spraying the manifold. I thought, "now this explains so much..."

Yeah, no kidding! I had been trying to figure that out for a while... Replaced my transmission cooler lines, changed my valve cover gaskets... I was about to tear everything out and redo the front seal and pan gasket before the steering started leaking bad enough for me to really see where it was coming from.

It all ended well, though. Steering is better than ever, and interestingly, it has stopped wandering on they highway too. I guess from all the aeration and moisture getting in, the fluid I drained out of there was pink. Like, Pepto Bismol pink. Bizarre.

There is one weird glitch: You know the groaning sound it makes when your fluid is low? My fluid is not low, and that sound does not happen when I turn the wheel to the left, but when I turn it right it makes that sound. All I can figure right now is I must still have air in my lines and it will eventually work itself out.

you can try flushing it. take the return hose off the pump, put a cap on the pump. put the return hose in a drain pan. disable the ignition. use a remote start switch, friend or sibling, to crank the motor. poor new fluid in the pump and crank the motor over whille pooring more fluid in. 1 quart should do it. put every thing back togther then start the motor. now turn the wheel just a little bit each way back a forth each time going a little bit more till you reach each lock. this should get all the air out and be quiet.

I kinda did that... Drained everything utterly before I filled again. But I'll try flushing that way if it doesn't go away soon. I just drove it again and it's already a little better.
