Will it idle with the trans in neutral and the clutch out?

can you move the crank back and forth in the block by pusing and pulling on the balancer or flywheel?
when you put the new throwout bearing in did you look to see if the clutch is in good shape? all the spings still in the center of it still in it?
did you try turning the input shaft of the trans when it was out?
i does this when its in nutrual right?

idles fine with the clutch out and in neutral just makes a hissing sound that comes and go like a bearing is going out

i'll try moving the crank tonight that could be the problem, but i wouldn't think so because the motor has only 70,000 miles on it
the clutch should be in good shape i had replaced it when i put the 351w in and i didn't see anything wrong with it when i had the trans out
i did turn the input shaft a little bit when i had it out of the car but not too much i just grabed it and twisted it not really looking to see if anything was wrong just making sure it still spun
it does it all the time. you start in nutrual and it will be making the intermediate bearing hiss sound and then when you start to engage the clutch it drops the idle and the eventual cause is the engine dies while making the bearing hiss sound constantly.

the engine runs really good still no problem there. no weird sounds or hard time starting or anything like that. i wouldn't think it was something with the crank because before i put it in my car i had the oil pan off of it and checked one of the main bearings and put a new oil pump into it. everything was tight and not worn at all.

Does your car have Power brakes or manual.I still think you have a vacuum leak somwhere. How is the idle when it runs???? is it over 900 rpm or below 600rpm???If its high...you have a vacuum leak somwhere or a mal adjusted carb.Does your car have A/C??? those vacuum lines for the controls run up under the dash...Could be the source of your hissing sound as well as the stall.Time to do some sleuthing...good luck.

It is snowing like crazy here too, has been all day. It sucks, I have been looking at snow since the end of November. I am starting to think that maybe your transmission input shaft is maybe a bit too long and it could be putting undo stress on the inside of the transmission, causing drag and bearing wear. Did you have a hard time getting the bolts to tighten up all the way on the bell housing when you put things back together? Maybe the transmission isn't fully square to the flywheel? I had a tractor do that and it ended up eating the journal to the transmission.

no it went together just fine no problems there. i'm going to check a few things and if i can't find anything i will then drop the trans and start the motor with out it in there. if it still makes the bearing hiss noise when the trans is out then i know it has something to do with the motor. i just can't think what it could be. i know i'll figure it out but it might be a pain in the behind and i have to have it licenced before the end of the month the city got on my for having an unlicednced car sitting in my drive way.

LOL, well that's just BS that they require you to license a car that you cannot even drive atm. What about timing? I know that is a fairly long shot, but it might be worth it to check it out.

i can look into it but i don't think that it has anything to do with timing but you know whats going to happen right? i'll spend all this time trying to figure out what is wrong with it pull the tranny again and do who knows what else and i'll find a stupid vacuum leak were i wouldn't have expected it.

Lol, well like I said it was a long shot. But in my experience with wrenching I have learned to check over the most very obvious things first. Sometimes they can even be a small combination of things that get our minds to working overtime and thinking that its something big. You will get it though, and the guys on this website have been really helpful in the problems that I have had so far.

so i started up the comet today and had my wife step on the clutch while i watched under the hood to see if the crank pulley moved in and out. that sucker stayed put. didn't move at all so i'm starting to think that problem is some were in the trans or in the clutch. going to pull the trans on friday to see what i can find. i have a spare i am planing on throwing under the car. so hopefully that is my problem and not something else. i did look for a vacuum leak and couldn't find anything. just keep working at it and soon i will figure it out.

Before you remove the transmission maybe you should describe how the engine stops, e.g.,
. It dies immediately like you turned off the ignition. Probably a wiring issue.
. It stumbles and misses and slowly dies. Probably a vacuum or fuel supply issue.
. Motor still running smoothly but slows and dies as if you let the clutch out with throttle at idle. Probably something binding.

I gotta believe if the transmission or clutch were binding the frictional heating would show up pretty quickly.

Why dont you just put a vacuum gauge on the motor then step on the clutch.

well as you push on the clutch the motor stays running smoothly and the rpms drop off like something is binding up and causing drag on the motor. i looked for a vacuum leak yesterday and couldn't find one. i have like on vaccum line for my dizzy and all the reast are pluged off. i don't have an egr valve on it any more. i put a spacer plate off a mustang on it and pluged the vacuum port on the back of that. i'm going to check a few more things before i go pulling the tranny agian but thats my next step. i was listening really intently to see were the bearing hiss sound was coming from and it sounds like it's coming from the trans or the clutch so if i track that down i should be able to determine my problem.
