I know they say there are no stupid questions but you looked. First what is the box behind the windshield washer tank on a 74 Maverick 6 cylinder? It is small with some type of reset button on top. Also what is the deal with the vacum advance having two lines going to it? The one to the rear th connected to the front of the carb and the one on the side is hooked to the tube that goes through the exaust manifold for the choke. Does this sound right?
The two vacuum lines serve different functions. The front tube (farthest from the distributor cap) advances the timing. The rearmost retards it on decelleration for emissions purposes. You can disconnect the rear one with no ill effects to performance. Based on your description, that one's not routed where it was supposed to be anyway. It should have been routed to a vacuum switch in a coolant port with a second one on that switch to full manifold vacuum.
The reset button thing is a seatbelt bypass switch so the mechanic doesn't have to sat in the seat with the seatbelt locked to start the engine
the box with the buton is for the seat belt interlock system. it keeps the car from starting without the seatbelt being buckled. you push that button and your susposed to be able to start it once with out the seatbelt being buckled. the system has usually been disabled. these were not stupid questions.
No leaks so I will remove that hose. I hate when they came up with this stupid stuff in the 70s. Like my 76 Cadillac that had no venturi port in the carb and the advance was connected to manifold vacum. How was that suposed to work?
That's cool I was just looking at your page. I bought my car for $300 from a local towing company as a non running car but after about 10 minutes and a battery I drove it home. It was not as nice as yours but it is a real solid car with very little rust.
Since I have a 74 Mav, I will ask a question since I'm assuming both our 74s are pretty much identical in the engine bay. what does this thing do exactly?
It's called a Fuel Evaporative Control System. The gas tank and carburetor is vented into the canister and and the fumes are sucked into the air cleaner to be burned when the engine is started.
