So I have just bought my 77 Comet. It need a new exhaust and I do not know ANYTHING about cars but want to begin the adventure to learning. Anyways I am wondering if there are differences in exhaust brands and types, what would be the best and loudest, but legal, exhaust and exhaust systems. I am a college student so please keep that in mind. Thanks homeslices.

I'd check around your local exhaust/muffler shops and see what kind of price they give you for a nice set of duals (assuming you have a v8 here) and depending on how loud you want, many types of mufflers are available. Some are quite expensive too. Tell the exhaust shop what you want to acheive and see what they recommend. Remember, they do this every day. You will probably be lucky to get a complete dual system for less than $300 though. I would certainly shop around. I use to manage a Midas shop many years ago and we charged $150 back then (20 years). Good luck with it.

Yep, $300, that sounds about right. It might be a bit cheaper if they can still use the one side that already runs part of the single system already on the car. I am going to be checking into the same thing as money allows. A V8 should have a rumble. A good duel system should even help mpg's a bit too.

I would get a set of longtube headers and run a 2 inch dual exhaust with thrush glasspacks

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
glasspacks sound like farts:p turbo mufflers are great for cruzin, flowmasters have a nice idle and sound bitchin(y) but they can have a bit of a drone for some people.

if you on a budget get your mufflers at a junkyard and it'll probably slash the price on the xhaust job in half.

Any cherry bomb should fit, but the shorter they are, the louder they are. And the placement of them can also dictate some of your power characteristics, at least from what I have been told.

Also, the longer they are, the harder they are to fit up close and tight to the floor. You need the short ones with the angled inlet/outlet to fit in the rear of the floor if you are going to run tail pipes all the way out.

    Want a 71-73 maverick 302 V 8
    Dynomax Bullets

I heard a Maverick with a 302 ,long tube headers,h pipe and 2.5" pipe back through two sets of Dynomax bullet mufflers.Very sweet.THe Dynomax Bullets, unlike some other glasspacks, do not have any louvers inside of the muffler......just straight trough.

The mufflers appeared to be about 14"-16" long.He ran stainless tips with cutouts in the rear valance.Summit has them for about $36 a piece.
