Hi all, I thought I had a 75 mav but its a 74. It has no engine or trans. it came with a 200 auto trans . I want to put a 302 thats been built and an auto trans back in it but I keep seeing that the 302 trans bell housing will not fit I don't want to make a lot of mods on this car. So I guess what I need to know is will the 302 with auto trans and the org. bellhousing fit? If not what other engine would be good to build and have headers on and what trans could I use? Also if I go back in with the 302 will I need to change the rear end or can I just beef up the org. rear end? I have never built a ford I have restored old britsh cars but not american cars P.S. can you build a 250 up to where its a tough engine and with all the crome on the engine and headers. I have seen a 302 with trans long shaft from an 64 1/2 can't remember what it came out of but could it be used? Gator
Hi, welcome...:Handshake if you are having to get a motor and transmission then get a...5.0 roller with C4/AOD. the 250 and 302 C4s are the same as far as fitting the car. the 170/200 are different. with the v8 motor stands the 302/5.0 will bolt in with no mods. for a mild built engine the 8" stock rear end will be fine and use the same driveshaft. for the money to build up the 250, you can have a nice 302.. ...Frank...:Handshake
Hi Frank, I am just outside of Asheville nc. am I understanding that if my car had the 200 in it that I will not have to make any mods to put in a 302 engine and trans except to the mounts? also when you say 302 or 5.0 isn't the 5.0 a newer engine or are you refering to the same engine? I am wanting to use a 302 and a tran from a 302 and build the 302 to some extent I am looking to have a mild built so I am understanding that I would have to change the rear end to the eight rear end. I am more up on the britsh cars so changing to a ford is a bit of a change for me. I want to car to sound and look and drive as best as I can but I am one that does not like to make to many changes I still want to organal look and most of the engine parts I guess I like the simi changes that you would not see I am planing to change to a mallory dual point dist if I can I did this to an old mg and it worked great I do not want to get into the elettonic ignition I am one to keep out the computers I guess you could say I want to keep it simple and if it ain't broke don't fix it. I work every day on the newest cars I work for a limo company and I have to do the eletrical all the time an I hate the comp and testing it for codes so I want to get back to the cars when they were simple and fun to work on. Is there any year 302 that was better then others, and do you know what other car the 302 could come out of and year that would with minor mount mods. sue
You dont have to do any mount mods per se'...You do need "maverick/comet" specific V-8 engine stands(these bolt in place of the 6 cyl stands at the bottom of the shock towers((mounts bolt to these) As for the best engine...A 302 aka 5.0 from an 87 or newer mustang is the best becuase they are roller cam bolcks with roller cams in em.Only 302s' I would avoid would be the 73 to 76 ones...(low compression smog motors with a taller deck)
302 and newer 5.0 are the same...almost...get a roller 5.0 (that's what i have) pic in my gallery. you can carb a 5.0 use a stock early dist. W/harden gear install a pertronix modual and be set. the motor stands came on the v8 mav/comets from the factory. just find a set and bolt them on.(no modding to be done). being you don't have a motor to start with puts you ahead of the game...just buy what you need/want. ...Frank...
V8 motors also have a belly bar, maverick specific motor mounts, and frame mounts. The frame mounts can be found on here and ebay. The motor mounts are available at napa. Stay away from the ones at AutoZone. They are made in Thailand and may not fit. If you build up a 250, it'll still need a different bellhousing. Be aware Ford makes 2 bellhousings. A small for the 157 tooth flexplate and a larger one for the 164 tooth flexplate. You also need to match up the engine plate and torque convertor for the size of the bellhousing. Also the older flexplates have a 28 ounce imbalance and the newer 5.0's have a 50 ounce. Check here before you spend your hard earned cash. You can use the search function on here to look for any threads that have discussed things like the v8 conversion, or the flexplates, etc.
I just checked and found out the mav had a 250 auto in it. Question is now if I get qand older 302 can I still use the newer AOD and bell housing ? also I have the 250 mounts that the motor mounts bolt up to will I need the adaptors for the 302, also I have the crossmember that the old auto trans mounted to will I need to change it? and where can I get the crossmember for the 302 engine. I want to get a 302 but it does not have the trans with it, and there is a newer AOD that I can pick up I don,t want to get one and then they not work together. I also want to get the body work and painting done any suggestions on the type of paint to use. Sue
