I rebuilt a 200 six for my 77 maverick. The bores were really worn. I ended up boring it .060 over. It runs great, uses no oil but vibrates at about 45 miles an hour. Any clues as to what might be wrong. I didn't have anything balanced, just put it together.

    Constant or pulsating?

Do it in nuetral? What about 45mph in two different gears?

With 60 over pistons you may have added enough reciprocating mass to warrant a re-balancing of the internals. But I doubt thats causing it...you would feel that all the time.Could be a bad U joint or a wheel balance.

yup, sounds like something in the chassis.... not the engine, if it's only doing it at 45mph

you may have changed the operating angles of the ujoints when you reinstalled the motor. did you use the origanl motor mounts and trans mount. im thinking they may have colapsed when you reinstalled them or the new ones could be wrong hights.

    I'll vote u-joints, too.

Maybe all that new-found torque finally killed one that was teetering on the edge. :thumbs2:

Had a 71 Torino that was fine until getting a massive 45 mph shake one day. The bearings in one U-joint fell out in ground up pieces as it was being removed from the car.

I just went through a vibration problem that drove me nuts.....ended up being the ujoint in the rear. It would vibrate a little and get worse as the speed increased. Couldn't feel any play in the joint with your hands, but looking in the cups, the bearings were ground short at the top. Replaced the joint, smooth again. Take a look at the cups, if you suspect anything, replace it. Cheap insurance!

That would be nice. This one vibrates sitting in neutral. I don't have a tach, so I don't know what rpm it is, but its not very fast.
    Thanks'

Since it is doing it in neutral.See above...also...possible bad harmonic balancer...bent/cracked flex plate...bad balance on the flex plate.

    Thanks,
I did replace the flex plate. I can't remember if it had a weight on it or not. It might not be the correct one.

im almost certain the 200 has the balance weight on the dampner and not on the flywheel, is your timing correct? (the reason i ask is that, i too have a 200 with a .60 overbore and a .20 shaved head, and it DOES NOT vibrate (it may be your points are dirty or plugs/wires are bad) but hopefully you repalced all that when you rebuilt your engine!) if you replaced all plugs/wires and points, and cap/rotor,
i would recheck your POINT gap, FIRING ORDER as well as IGNITION TIMING(remember to unplug your vacume lines and plug them up with a couple golf tees, screws,etc... set the timing and plug the lines back in.

check point gap, firing order and ignition timing (could be a misfire vibration if you didnt set one of those back to factory specs) and (hopefully you replaced them anyway) the plugs, wires and points/condensor,and cap and rotor.i have a 200 equipped mav, bored .60 over and the head is shaved .20,I DID NOT HAVE IT BALANCED AND IT DOES NOT VIBRATE!!!!!!!

IF you've covered and recovered these issues i would then agree with everybody else (wheel imbalance or U- joints)

    hope this helps,(y)
