Hey guys, I've just got my car back on the road reliably and I'm getting a whine in 3rd gear in my T5. It's a freshly rebuilt T5 I think a 91 model. I'm running Royal Purple ATF for manual transmissions and a Pro 5.0 shifter.

I don't think its binding in third but maybe I should adjust the shifter stop to make sure its fully going into third. Anybody have other ideas? Also since its a fresh build how many miles do you guys recommend putting on it before I can drive it hard?

ive seen T5's whine in first but never third, especially after a rebuild. i do know that third is bad for going out in them though.

as for mileage, i'd say a couple hundred should be good b4 u start to get into it

Did you put new gears in it when you rebuilt it, or just bearings syncros etc?

I bought it off a friend who had it freshly rebuilt. All I do know is that it was rebuilt at a trans shop and I am the first one to use it. He was moving and sold off all his car stuff.

There is some aftermarket gears out there (china made i think) That doesn't match the pitch on the cluster shaft. I have never gotten a hold of any but had a friend that did. What was left after a few miles wasn't pretty. Also if third was replaced which is usually the first gear in a T5 to get damaged it may not mesh correctly with the worn cluster. The only way to know for sure is to take it apart and check. Also if the end play isn't correct you could get some noise out of that.

Well I just and I mean just got the car on the road reliably and I don't want to lose the good months by taking apart a transmission that I probably couldn't put back together myself anyway. :)

I'm going to back off the shifter stop to see how if that helps, my thought is that its in gear but maybe not quite fully so its binding. At least I hope so, I'll find out the hard way I guess b/c I'm not dropping the trans any time soon. Its been over 3 years since its been on the road and I'm going to enjoy it dammit! I'm headed to the dyno in May after I get some miles on it to see what I'm accomplished. I'll get some new pictures on my website so you guys can see the work I've done.

I have a T5, and I had some noise and notchy shifting with it a while back. It is a world class T5, and the guys at D&D Performance said that if I use the B&M TrickShift fluid, the shifting would be hard. I changed to Dextron/Mercon lll, and it cured all the ills the trans had. Cheap fix, but very effective. Hope this helps.

When they said hard I'm hoping they just meant the shifting, not actually hard on the tranny. This Royal Purple stuff is expensive! Here's the description from Summit. I'm also running Royal Purple gear oil in the rear end.

I used the B&M stuff from the day I got the tranny, and it shifted a bit notchy, and seemed hard to get into gear. I changed the shifter from the stock one to a Hurst Comp. Plus, and it got even harder to shift. Since I changed to the Dextron lll, it is easier, and the trans has quieted down some. The TrickShift is thicker, and that is what is making it harder to shift. For the World Class trans, the factory specifies the Dextron lll trans fluid.:)

If you really want super smooth shifting try the GM synchromesh.
